Una Serata Indimenticabile
By: lorenzo | April 7th, 2008Che Spettacolo!

What is there to say after witnessing a game like that? I think I’ll let the photos and video speak for all of us…
The pure beauty of this shot cannot be seen from this picture. The way Amauri split two Juve defenders and fired an absolute curler into the top right corner with Buffon doing all he could but STILL coming up short can only be seen in this video (namely around the :45 mark):
That is just pure class…pure skill…and believe it or not, this was only the SECOND best goal from the game. Did you read that right? Yes, you did. Only the second best.
Where are the doubters and haters??? Only idiots would not want this man on their team. He is a force to be reckoned with. He has scored most of his goals this year on will alone. The first of his brace is a tribute to that.
Just on the stroke of halftime, Fabio “Bikerman” Caserta delivered an absolute majestic cross that found Amauri rising above his defender to smash a powerful header past Buffon into the back of the net to make it 2-0. The clip I found has both of Amauri’s goals in it - and there’s nothing wrong with seeing the first one again. On top of it all, you get to see Guana’s “O” face and Buffon’s look of shock…
The FSC commentator, in his best Ray Hudson impression, described Amauri’s second goal like this: “What a leap! Like a salmon out of a cool river!”
Palermo then came out in the second half and played rather poorly, letting Fontana get absolutely shelled. Eventually, Juventus broke through. Sissoko had a couple nice moves and shot directly at Fontana who parried it away, only to find Del Piero in a legitimate offside position (not called) which he then finished to make it 2-1.
After 19 more minutes, Juventus found the back of the net again. Del Piero scored an almost identical goal to bring the Rubentini to even terms. As the game progressed, Juve looked more and more dangerous and it seemed that this game might get away from Palermo…
But then along came Cassani. Mattia Cassani to be exact. Seldom used defender Cassani. Note, he’s a DEFENDER. On 89′, a Palermo free kick was sent into the Juve box where an attempted clearance was sent 26 meters out to an awaiting Cassani.
Cassani then unleashed a stunning, miraculous left-footed screamer into the far top corner of the net. There was absolutely NOTHING Buffon could do but watch in shock (again).
And when I said Buffon could do nothing but watch, I mean it:
Truly, a wonder strike at the death that would send Palermo and the Renzo Barbera into delirium. There are the 3 points, there is your ballgame.
And of course, here is the video of the best goal Cassani will ever score in his life (and perhaps the most important):
Non ho parole…
Amauri and Cassani were two of the real heroes in this game, but let’s not forget about two others that had huge roles: Super Jimmy Fontana and Bikerman Caserta. They both came up big in the game. In any case, I leave you with a full video of the highlights from the game and we’ll be back soon with other news and relevant information as Palermo gets ready to exact revenge on our rivals Catania in the derby this weekend.
FORZA PALERMO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Nice one Lorenzo. Two things to watch: the muscles on Amauri’s right leg in the picture, and the subtle step-over by Caserta right after the throw in.

well nobody can deny that palermo is perhaps the most exciting and dramatic team to watch in Serie A. Watching the game hearing the fans for the entire 95 minutes, especially right before and after Cassani’s goal, the late winner against the big guys. This and the Milan game at home will stick in memory for a long time.

Those muscles are the business. lol
Colin - you’re right. I would place the Milan game right behind this one, but not that far behind. This game had all sorts of action though, so it gets the edge. Plus, Miccoli’s free kick was good, but Kalac could’ve done more with the attempted save. Cassani, on the other hand, just put that perfectly. Nothing else to say. lol
FORZA PALERMO!

And they still can’t stop it..
“#3- Palermo is still a shitty team with no history. They’ve been challenging for a Champion’s League spot the last few years, and people have seem to forgotten before being promoted, the last time they were in Serie A was 1973…and they have been in Serie C2.”
They do tend to forget that they only luckily beat us in the Coppa final of ‘79, as a Serie B-team. And yes, I have seen the game : )

cmon, would you expect anything less? it’s not surprising anymore… ha

Time to focus on Craptania. They beat us once, they just beat Napoli, and for a relegation contender, they’re not the team from last year. If we didn’t have the start we did in the fall, we could very possibly be worse off, points wise.
Time for the tifosi to put on the show they did Sunday, for a match that is VERY important in standings, and don’t get me started on pride.

Spiderman Zenga moved up Vargas to an attacking winger role and supposedly he tore Napoli to absolute bits. We need Zaccardo to lock down that side, as Kat mentioned previously, he has problems with quick attackers.

Actually, in that case, I’d go with Zaccardo since he’s got better defensive skills than Cassani. To be fair Zacco doesn’t look so shaky closing down, lately. But going forward? Now that’s a different story.

ricci - yeah, i saw that Zenga did that with Vargas… you’d have to think, based off of the success he had against Napoli, he’d try it again…although, the only reason he made the switch was due to lack of players thru suspension or injury, i believe.

What kind of error did you get? There’s no comments in the moderation queue…so I don’t know what it is.

Catania are no great shakes, believe me. They played with a lot of fire but I wouldn’t call them dangerous. They put 10 men behind the ball and caught us napping on a couple set pieces. They may still escape the drop as the difference in class from 16-20 is negligible. They are all as likely to stay up as they are to go down.
If you pressure their back line and can string together some passes through the midfield, I think you should be ok here. Wouldn’t surprise me to see the rosanero rip them a new one.
Congratulations on the victory. This team is exciting as hell to watch sometimes. Couldn’t come against a nicer team too.

It kept marking my comments as spam…eh, it’s all good.
On a Palermo note, Miccoli just might be ready for the derby…let’s hope he doesn’t break a fingernail or something…

Breaking news, a stiff wind flew into Palermo and blew Miccoli straight over the straights of Messina into Calabria. He is now venturing somewhere in the Southern Calabrese hills, doubtful for this weekend.

I agree with Joe on the Catania bit though. Outside of a few quality players they are a pretty shoddy team. I hope Amauri bags another 2 gols and raises his price to 30

hahaha Miccoli…
im just glad that Rinaudo and Bosko have gotten the PT they deserve. they will be solid contributors for next season. Then, if we bring back Bovo and Dellafiore, we’ll be looking solid given the money we get from Barzagli and Amauri…
In an interview the other day, Amelia said how he was already a Palermo player but then Spinelli changed his mind at the last minute to cancel the sale. I dont know, but i wouldn’t be surprised if Palermo goes after him again in the summer.

oh and check out these words from Rinaudo about the upcoming derby:
“In light of a victory, I’m ready to drive around town for a week with a bumper sticker on my car printed with result of the match…naturally if I must be positive.”
Gotta love this kid…

Napoli played a horrible game and I also think Catania’s high came as a result of playing it up for their new coach, Mister Zenga. I think I need a little more convincing that Vargas is as great in the midfield as he supposedly showed Sunday. Congrats on beating Juventus!!!
