But getting back to the lovely world of the Transfer Market…here’s what I’ve been seeing:

De Melo as Amauri’s replacement (heaven forbid we don’t reach that CL spot) in June.

Rubinho as a replacement for the aging Fontana (should he leave at the end of the season).

And more importantly, for this January, it seems that we will be looking to sign a defender that can play in the center or wing…

Obviously, Agliardi is being loaned out in January and Bresciano is as good as gone. It appears Samp and Palermo 2 (Torino) have their eyes on Diana…

Regarding these “links” to the Mafia, it shouldn’t come as a surprise. After all, it’s the first thing that comes up whenever someone mentions “Sicily”. It’s a fact of life that all Sicilians have to deal with. I travel back to the “homeland” every year to visit family and am well aware of “Mafia” influence that of course is still present. Kevin – interesting, I also did my senior thesis on the Mafia or more directly on Giovanni Falcone’s representation as the symbol of Italian justice. I also got to research the topic while I was there (which is nice haha). I’d be interested in reading yours as well as Steven’s respective papers on the matter.

ANYWAY, I have no doubt that the Mafia has tried to find a way into the club’s business. It is only natural especially given the club’s success over the past 5 years. However, I do feel that the current administration has rejected any sort of attempt whether direct or indirect towards that mafia influence. I am not surprised by any of Lo Piccolo’s documents having references towards the club. It makes sense – the Mafia’s influence in the business realm is common knowledge (just look at the report compiled by the government earlier this year noting the large percentage of organized crime in regards to the Italian economy). I guess all I’m saying is that we should take these “revelations” as nothing surprising but have more faith in the club’s leadership to know that they’re hands are clean.

Steven, I also did my college thesis on the subject. The info. I dug up definitely defends K.J.’s stance. If you don’t believe me, read Falcone’s manifests. The “thing” has a history of not being only linked to front office, but players as well. To what extent the role they actually play is unknown, but their presence is undeniable. Like k.j. said, their not concerned with how well they place, but how much money they can make of the cash cow. They want to be as discreet as possible and out of the limelight. Which is why, in my opinion, they have an indirect connection to the club even to this day. To talk about the “thing” is taboo to a Sicilian, but the cringed facial expression of the mention of the word is no doubt a testament of its role in society. To have primary source documents linking Lo Piccolo to a Palermo coach and stadium plans is no coincidence, sir!

Steven, agreed. I don’t think they have a major influence on the teams affairs. Yet, your “brush it under the rug” type attitude doesn’t lessen the problem.
