The Queen Of The South

It had been exactly 25 days since Napoli came to Palermo for a Serie A-game. Two wonderfull teams, two great cities with similar problems, two former parts of the Kingdom of Two Sicilies. And one hell of a game. First of all, there was the banner in the audience saying ‘Edy, Grazie Per Tutto’. Palermo-fans tend not to forget their former heroes, as Napoli-coach Reja was part of the team that beat the Partenopei 1-0 in ‘72.

I haven’t seen much off the game, as I was having a romantic dinner at the time, but I’ve seen enough to say that this was one of our best games ever. Brienza played a really great game, I think this was the game he needed for proving that he’s worthy of a spot in the starting eleven. Old Man Jimmy was his usual self: keeping out almost everything. Although he was lucky when he came out on one of the first Napoli-chances: takin’ on Napoli with 10 guys would’ve been terrible. Up front there were a lot of chances, but for some reason the ball didn’t like getting into the goal. We should’ve at least scored 4 times Saturday. So finally we can put that ‘5 draws in a row’-crap behind us, and go into the international break with full confidence. Bring on those filthy Scudetto-stealin’ Juventini!

Line-ups:

Palermo: Fontana; Zaccardo, Biava, Barzagli, Capuano (Pisano 56); Diana, Tedesco (Cassani 72), Simplicio (Jankovic 83), Caserta; Brienza, Cavani

Napoli: Iezzo; Contini (Maldonado 23) (Calaio’ 73), Cannavaro, Domizzi; Garics, Hamsik, Gargano, Bogliacino, Savini; Lavezzi, Zalayeta (Sosa 82)

Ref: Rosetti

Ratings
FONTANA 7: Fast, secure and always in the right place. Can’t be blamed for the Napoli-goal.

ZACCARDO 5,5 : Should’ve been faster on that corner kick. Was late and Bogliaccino scored.

BIAVA 6: Did a good job keeping Gargano and Lavezzi out of the game, but is always a little bit less good than anyone else.

BARZAGLI 6,5: Leader of the defense, didn’t give Zalayeta much space.

CAPUANO 5,5: Another player not good enough for a starting spot. Everytime Hamsik came near him, he shit his pants and made a mistake.

PISANO 6: Replaced ShitPants, did enough. Nothing more than enough, but enough.

DIANA 6: Less prominent than in other games, was closed down well. Did a good job helping the defense close down on Napoli.

SIMPLICIO 6: Was closed down good by Gargano, but had some nice outbreaks. Irreplaceable force in midfield.

JANKOVIC s.v.: Not enough playtime to judge the kid.

TEDESCO 7,5: I still think he’s old, lazy and not good enough for Serie A. But i’m willing to forget all of that for at least 2 weeks because of his magnificent goals.

CASSANI 6: Anonymous. Again. What’s his name again?

CASERTA 6,5: Told you guys he was good, didn’t I? Shit, I love him. He looks like a retarded biker and he can’t cross, but I love him!

CAVANI 6,5: Did well, but has to do more to get in the footsteps of Amauri. Had at least 3 fantastic opportunities to score, but missed all of them.

BRIENZA 7: First time in the starting eleven this season, excellent game. Did well covering for Miccoli, too bad he didn’t score.

Man Of The Match:

Tedesco. Jimmy did great, but Tedesco was the man.

Cavani is too raw… He needs match time, but Im afraid it will have to be garbage time late in games…

Jankovic has yet to adapt to Serie A. However, I think once it clicks with him, we’ll need him on the field much more

Agreed Kevin…Cavani is ridiculously raw. You can tell he just oozes talent but he needs that bit of refinement, that instinct to hold the ball up and pass it off. He just seems to have one speed and heads right for goal. If Miccoli and Amauri are healthy the only way I see him getting time is if we put him out on the wing. He was really effective against Genoa on the wing because he had tons of open field to run on.

I went back and watched that game again…Diana was awful. There was a few times he gave the ball up in a bad position and he’s just soooo slow. Also a few times in the first half he needed to play the ball to Cavani or Brienza early and he just steps on the ball and plays it back to Zaccardo. Can we get him off the starting 11 immediately?

I’ve always been high on Diana but he’s had a pretty poor season…I wouldn’t give up on him yet, his defense is still above average

On Diana: if i were Colantuono, i’d only play him in the defense. He’s got some great defending impulses when in midfield, but his attacking qualities seem to have gone away completely.

On Cavani: at Danubio, the only thing he had to do was claim the ball, and head for goal. He’ll learn it eventually, but after almost a year he should’ve already figured out that you’re not gonna get far against the likes of Chiellini, Materazzi and Nesta when not passing a ball.

On Calaio: i think most of us would love the kid to come back home. he’s a fantastic striker, and he’s perfect for Palermo. the only thing that needs to change is his arrogance. As he’s not getting plenty of playtime in Napoli, a transfer in january might be possible

These football rumors are worse than women gossip magazines…

Anyway, these Calaio rumors…true or false? Anybody have any primary sources? Would it be hinging on an Amauri sale? How much would he cost?

Sorry for the questions, but I am curious

I would definitely be happy to have Calaio return home but to be fair I don’t really see him breaking into the Palermo squad. Who’s he gonna replace? The only person coming in January should be a new LB to kick ShitPants squarely to the bench.

im saying hes good to have as a nice back up like we need one more striker on the bench plus he could prob play a suporting role in the midfield the way he plays

and i dont know what everybody sees in migliaccio i say we sell him in january and make room for someone else

Hi guys i’m new to this place:)
Finally we get to see some decent “counterattack” including from the lot thanks mostly to Brienza. I knew we won’t regeret keeping him in the end:) Screw the Aussie; Ciccio should play the title along with Amauri and Miccoli from now on.
Matador seemed clueless as usual. IMO he’s not ready for a titlerole yet. Still needs to fully adapt himself into the team.
Meanwhile our lateral force was yet tragic. WHY o why can’t any of our full/wing-backs get past a single man? let alone inability to cross. Zac had another shit performance and I frankly don’t know wth his problem is. Between ShitPants(lol) and Pisano I don’t know which is worse. I dare say we’ve got probably the most pathetic LB line in whole lega. Winterbreak is our only hope.

What’s up Kat…Welcome to our board
I agree with you… I dont understand why Zaccardo doesnt flank down the side like he used too.. Well, maybe it’s because were countered on so often we need his ass planted in the back..

    Keep Brienza in!!

I think the reason why Zaccardo doesn’t fly up the right is because Diana is just such a negative impact on that right side, and Tedesco couldn’t provide the requisite cover. Last year Zaccardo had Corini and Guana playing deep who provided lots of cover for him. Diana gets caught in possession easily and Zaccardo is scared to leave that side open because Aimo has lost all speed. If anyone watched Zaccardo in the South Africa friendly he played great, closed down McCarthy a bunch of times who is a very talented player in his own right, and worked a ton of nice 1-2’s with Foggia. Whenever Zaccardo has the ball I don’t find myself worrying. ShitPants is another story.

Our central midfield is actually coming around really nicely. I think we may see Brienza on the wing when Migliaccio comes back. Migliaccio is our best DM on the team and can provide cover so Zaccardo can get up the wing and play some nice overlaps with whoever plays on that right side. Caserta usually plays on the left because that left side is our real weak point, and he just destroys people so Capuano doesn’t blow his colon. Caserta-Migliaccio with Simplicio a little further up is the best combo, and I think Colantuono knows it. This team is gonna start coming around, I wouldn’t be surpised to take pts off Juve.

Thanks for a warm welcome KJ:)

Yes I agree Zac is not getting adequate cover to go forward, but even when he was sitting back he hasn’t exactly been impressive. He seems quite distracted these days and makes me wonder.

I too think Ciccio on the wing is a good idea. He’d add speed into the sides that we’re desparately in need of. Hm..your middle formation looks good enough ricci, but I wouldn’t leave Guana out. I’d put him in Simplicio or Caserta’s place.

Glory hunter…There’s no reason to come to our site and start shit. I know the Juve offside has all of 2 fans but it’s unnecessary. Oh, we’ll take Tiago off your hands since you fucknuts won’t even play him. idiots, he’s the best player on your team by FAR and you won’t even play him.

kat, I don’t know about Simplicio for Guana. Guana is slow and can’t hold possession like Simplicio can. If anyone its Guana for Migliaccio cause Caserta deserves his place right now and he brings something different to the team. A lot of ppl seem to like Guana…don’t get me wrong he’s a good player, I just think Migliaccio is better.

kat, where are you at in Italy right now? Do you know of anywhere to get the Palermo away shirt…I’ve been looking but I can’t find a store/site that sells the 08 version.

last but not least, who would all you guys like to see come in to replace ShitPants? It’s obvious we need a real left back, teams are just gonna keep exploiting Capuano/Pisano.

I’m not in Palermo and only Palermo stuff I can find here are cheap replicas on streets. Latest kits don’t seem to be in stores yet.
But I did manage to find an online store that sells the 0708 kits:

Roberto: does your mommy let you use her computer often? You know you should be at least 14 years old and have a 65+ IQ to be posting on the internet, you know that?

So…if we have no relevance or history, then why do we pack more tifosi every time we play at home than the Glorious Juventus? Right…

As for the wreckage that is the left back: i’m thinking Dossena/Molinaro/Pasqual/Vargas as a LB. Now i know why the groundskeeper has to mow that part of the field every time we played home…Capuano’s fertilizing everything upthere.

    Kat, welcome!!
