The Europa League: Friend Or Foe

By: Steven | October 23rd, 2009

With 25% of the season gone, maybe it’s time to start talking about things that were said at the kick off. It is (and always was) clear that we were never going to be challenging for the scudetto this season. I still blame Zenga for saying that, as it was clearly a contributor to our terrible start. The ‘real’ objective (the board’s objective) is the Champions League. Right now, we’re not far away from a CL-spot, but of course there’s still an awful lot of games to be played. Starting with the hellish trio that is coming up in the following weeks. The CL would be awesome though: lots of money, lots of exposure and a better FIFA ranking.

But…if it were up to me, I’d take the Europa League over the CL this season. And here’s why: this team isn’t CL-material. Three new quality players won’t make this team CL-material. Sure, the money would come in handy, but we’re sure to end up dead last in our group. And that is IF we pass the preliminary rounds. CL doesn’t like Cinderella stories. Go figure what that will do to the confidence of guys like Pastore and Cavani.

Second, as we would be the least prolific team in the group, we’re sure to get three big ones. Think Real-Manchester City-Sporting-Palermo. No way you’re gonna advance there, not even third place. And playing Real on wednesday is really gonna fuck up your sunday match against Bologna. The Chievo Case, as it is called since three seasons ago.

No, I’ll gladly take fifth or sixth this year. Keep the biggest part of the team together, add two experienced guys and a talented youngster and give them a season to get some European experience. If that works out (and we don’t fuck up in Serie A), you can try to aim for the CL the season after that. Is the Europa League a gift? It could be. The UEFA Cup wasn’t: 70% of the teams came from places where they still fuck their daughters in the ass, and the 5-team format was a joke. Now, you get to play bigger teams, which means more money, no frozen stadiums and more experience. On the other hand, if you’re in a group with the likes of Villarreal, Red Bull Salzburg and Benfica, there’s no guarantee that you will get past the group stages. And there’s still the chance of fucking things up big time in Serie A. Example? Genoa.

So, what do you think? Should we choose the slow way and aim for the EL, or should we try three steps at a time and settle for nothing but CL?

fiorentina is a prime example of how to get into european football. europa league is a stepping stone for the champions league and most importantly its all experience

    agree 100% alex.

Remember what happened to Palermo when they came out of relegation and into the Europa? The did FUCKING SHIT that season, to play in the Champions or even Europa we need to have “two teams” right now Palermo has one great team but those guys cant play twice a week, just something to think about

the thing is this: by making the CL this year, you accomplish two things.

    1. It allows younger players who might move on for “greener pastures” to stay with the team for at least another year due to the draw of the Champions League. Thus, stalling the need to sell off stars and replace them with young, unknown talent.

    2. The team has a sales pitch to work with in order to draw other (perhaps “established”) talent to the squad. Players are drawn to CL competition. That’s no secret. And what better way to draw them in by offering CL competition within an “open” squad (starting spots up for grabs)?

I mean, we’ve already been over this more or less. We’ve made the Europa League several times now with little to no success. It’s the team and upper management not really taking it seriously. Furthermore, we’ve been rebuilding for years now while stating “Champions League is the goal for next season”. Well, that ends now. CL is what we should be aiming for this season. For once, we have a team that has trimmed the fat more than any other season. We have a solid starting XI and a better bench than most years past. While I’d like to think differently, there’s no guarantee that Kjaer and Cavani aren’t gone by next year. So, the time is now.

There’s always the chance of the Lazio/Chievo thing, though Lorenzo. Sure, #1/#2 are valid points but CL is much more demanding than the Europa League, and a qualification one year can doom your Serie A campaign the next, it’s happened a lot.

I think Palermo is best to get into the Europa League, have a good run, mature, etc. If Palermo can promise their young players a run out in the Europa League, they might stay. (Look at the teams in it this year- Valencia, Villarreal, some good teams) CL might just be overwhelming, look at Fiorentina’s first season in the CL was terrible because they lacked the maturity, even with a full Europa League season under their belt.

Id rather us make the cl do average in it and finish like 8th 9th during that season just to get a taste of it .. then build for the following years… europa league has just as many if not more games then the cl in its new format.

europa league next season, bring in one quality midfielder to replace liverani (they are out there players like candreva and poli are ideal) then bring in some of the scudetto primavera winning side to add a bit of depth to the team.

all the top teams have quality youth teams and locally sourced talent will always put that little bit extra in. if zamparini wants the champions league he will have to spend big on a couple of players, you cant always bring in young stranieri and hope they will catapult you into the top four, it takes time to build a team.

who’s to say that we’d end up in a group of death in the cl anyway? we could have sevilla, stuttgart, and some randon team from romania like rangers has. i could see us advancing from a group like that now, and with added talent its an even stronger possibility

to be honest, i think we’d finish third in the average cl group from this yr

Our primavera would beat lippis first team .. Lipp is a jaded selfish stubborn self indulgent prick and italy suck at the moment because of him and his lack of balls .. fact.

all this talk is pointless really because you are yet to qualify for the champions league! you cant say you would win in any group because you havent played that well in europe thus far. you dont need to win the uefa cup but if you gave it a good shot, it would give the team valuable experience.

top 3 this season looks like inter, juve and fiorentina with milan and roma looking like they will fight for 4th spot. then you have genoa, lazio, sampdoria, palermo, napoli all with the same objectives. throw in a wild card like parma and qualifying for europe is going to be especially hard this season

Agreed giro…What have we brought in with the money from Toni, Amauri, Grosso, Zaccardo and all the other little shits we’ve sold to Parma (Guana, Dellefiore, etc)…That’s in excess of 35-40 million euros…And Zampa wants to construct a new stadium : L’Espresso…
