Random Coppa Randomness
By: Steven | August 20th, 2008Another slow newsday. While other big, fantastic clubs like Roma, Milan and Chievo are partying because, in no particular order, Francesco Totti has been able to shave his legs without cutting himself, Shevshenko might be back with his tail between his legs, and fan number 402 has been born, we have nothing to rejoice about. But hey, no news is good news, right?
So, what could we possibly talk about then? The Bresciano-to-Rangers story? Nope. Cavani to West Ham? Nope. Miggy’s joy? Nope. Let’s talk Coppa.
Some of you might remember the pre-Roma-Inter-Borefest days, when the Coppa Italia was a competition that could be won by everybody. Teams just below the absolute top, like Bologna and Parma, made it the highlight of their season. Hell, even Vicenza won it at the end of the nineties. It’s a nice trophy to put on the shelve, and it gets you into Europe. Every year since our return to Serie A, we have been competing on at least two levels. Serie A + Europe + Coppa. Now that there’s no Europe, why not go for that Coppa-victory? We came close twice, in ‘74 and ‘79, but we never won it. Hell, we never won anything. So why not go for it this year?
Things kick of this weekend, on Saturday at the Barbera at 20.30. Ravenna should be beaten to advance to the next round. I don’t expect anty difficulties here, but we need a squad that is focused and willing. After Ravenna, Genoa or Mantova awaits. Mantova would be nice, Genoa is doable. After that, the big guns come in to play. Vicenza, Bologna and Ascoli, accompagnied by minor provincial teams like Roma and Inter. By then our boys will be doing well in the league and will be focused to show the world their skill. And you know what helps? Having a big fuckin’ squad. Competing at two levels might work. Imagine playing your A-team in Serie A every week, and resting them for the Coppa. Then you still might be able to come up with something like this:
Jimmy
Cassani - Dellafiore - Bovo - Carrozzieri
Guana - Simplicio - Ciaramitaro
Jankovic
Cavani - Budan
Add 4-5 A-players to that, and you will get this:
Jimmy
Cassani - Bovo - Dellafiore - Carrozzieri
Jankovic - Simplicio - Nocerino
Miccoli
Cavani - Lanzafame
Doesn’t look too shabby, does it? This is the fuckin’ time guys, if we don’t have a great Coppa-run this year, we’ll never have one. Ravenna, shit yourselves, we’re coming.

I love the coppa italia even though we can’t get the early round games on the tv. It real gives the teams in the lower leagues a chance to shine. What’s up with the free pass for the top teams. They should have to travel to those little hole in the wall stadiums too. Goltv should a few of the rounds last year, I hope they do it again. Should be a easy game for you guys. My families home town team Salerno. Should have a intresting game. It’s salernitana vs lecce. Lecce still have to prove themselves in the serie a. Don’t know what to expect out of them.

btw, Steven, the intro to this post made me laugh fairly well. omg! it’s Totti! let’s worship at his feet! i hope he spits at me so i can save some of his saliva and put it in a bottle to keep for all eternity!
sadly, i bet that last statement would apply to plenty of Roma fans…

oh yeah, and Amelia fits in with the pretty boys as well, Steven.

I have a feeling Lecce is gonna be straight garbage this year, we should count 6 points already.

Hey Lorenzo, Steven please leave the Romans alone they all have a horrible season coming up lets not ruin there fun now. Since they think they are doing so good in the mercato by buying Loria, Riise, and Baptista (all World Class players may I add).

Ricci I would also throw Cagliari and Reggina in the same category as Lecce

Our beloved Ciccio Brienza can keep Reggina afloat!

I was going for Chievo as most likely to go back to B next year, but after grabbing Granoche, Pinzi and Langella i’m going with Reggina/Cagliari/Lecce.

dudes…this stuff about De Melo leaving for Lille is just making me laugh. TMW was saying that he is very close to being sold to Lille because he “hasn’t convinced Colantuono, therefore, they’ll sell him and make another strong push for Floccari”. BS! Just straight garbage…
Luckily, Zamparini told Stadionews that it’s a bunch of crap and that De Melo is going nowhere. After all, he says we bought him to reinforce our attack…why would we sell him? Good point.
FORZA PALERMO!

I have yet to see a player who gets bought in the summer and thrown out before the season ever starts.
So now Bresciano is staying?

No, Bresciano isn’t staying. Zamparini just said that he hopes he’d stay because he’s a “player who can make a difference”. I agree with that statement if Bresciano can re-capture the form he had prior to last season. We need determined players who want to be here…

Bring in Pulzetti or Diamanti and I’ll be happier than the Lecce blogger seeing Cassano in his underoos

No surprise if Bresciano does end up staying. What would you rather… haggis, SPL, and miserable weather or panelle, Serie A, and sunny Palermo? No competition I say. A move to the SPL would be a step backwards for him.
He’s been doing well with the Aussies and hopefully this form is maintained with the rosanero! But i’ll only accept a fully committed Bresc, otherwise just pack your bags already!

I agree Rob, but I just don’t seem him in the Colantuano’s cards…Its time for a fresh start, for both of us

why not? we’ve fielded second-rate sides in the competition the last few yrs, but that was because we had to uefa to worry about in addition to the league. la coppa is not the most prestigious of tournaments, but to win it would send a strong message to the larger clubs that we’re not fading away

Does anyone know if a stream will be available for this match? myp2p isn’t showing any Coppa Italia listings

Giustino, I don’t think it will be shown over the internet. I expect broadcasting only from the 1/8 finals.
