Preview: Sampdoria - Palermo
By: Steven | January 10th, 2008
Sunday December 13th, 2008
Stadio Luigi Ferraris, Genova
Squad Status
Palermo
So, a new year…let’s hope we’ll get some more wins than in 2007. The good thing is that the squad is fully fit, and the atmosphere is pretty good after some easy exhibition games and a week in the Andalusian sun. The only one who’s trying to cause a stir is Bosko Jankovic. The Serbian Stallion told La Gazzetta that he wants more playing time, or else he will find himself a new team. I think he’s right. The kid’s got talent, but he hasn’t been able to show it off because he doesn’t get a chance. Let’s hope Guido gives him a starting place come Sunday.
Probable Line-up
Fontana; Zaccardo, Biava, Barzagli, Capuano; Guana, Migliaccio, Simplicio; Miccoli, Amauri, Cavani
Sampdoria
Problems for Mazzarri: Sergio Volpi and Stefano Lucchini are suspended, and Vincenzo Montella and Gennaro Delvecchio are injured. With Castellazzi most likely to replace the talented Antonio Mirante in the goal, Samp can only use about 75% of their strength. The biggest danger will come from the frontline, where Cassano and Bellucci will do everything to score.
Probable Line-up
Castellazzi; Campagnaro, Sala, Gastaldello; Maggio, Sammarco, Palombo, Pieri; D Franceschini, Cassano, Bellucci
Categorical Matchup
The Old vs. Slippy Gloves: Palermo. Jimmy is forty years old, but I dare to bet that he’s still better than Castellazzi. I’ve seen Samp get asswhooped by Milan (5-0), and Castellazzi looked like he had lube on his gloves. Sure hope he decides to take a wank before the game again…
The One Legged Bandit versus The Three Jacks: Push. The defense did well against Fiorentina, but I still don’t know what happened in the last 15 minutes against Lazio. Barzagli and Zaccardo are good, but I still don’t like the fact that Cyrano and Capuano are in there. Did Rinaudo die or something? On the other hand, the Samp-defense isn’t the best there is, and when we put three strikers at them…aiaiai!
The Three Musketeers versus Mixed Grill: Palermo. Samp has something of everything in midfield: a fast one, a powerfull one, a young one…Palermo has the Baldy Squad and Simplicio. Must be enough to take care of the Samp-midfield, and with Miccoli helping a hand, I see things working out.
Trident Madness versus The Crybaby Posse: Push. Against any other opponent, I’d say Palermo. Amauri, Cavani, Miccoli…I mean, this is pure delight people! But Samp has Bellucci, and seriously, I’ve seen what this man has done in the past, and he scares the shit out of me. Luckily, he’ll be having to work together with this man. Or, if we’re really lucky, even with this one.
Final Analysis
We’ve been to Marrassi earlier this year, and we barely survived. 3-3 against Genoa is not good, so now it’s time to take revenge on the city. Does it matter that it’s not the same team? Hell no, we just want to see those Genovese cry. That’ll whipe those European dreams away! Well, it’s not just revenge, we also really NEED to win this. Morale is good, and that mustn’t change. Kickin’ Doria’s ass will give us a 7-point advantage on them, and could get us closer to Fiorentina and Udinese. And that also means closer to those big sacks of money that is the Champions League.
Sampdoria had a rough patch before Christmas, but maybe they have recovered. As long as Palermo can shake of the Lazio-anticlimax, we’ll be just fine. Just for the record, last year’s game ended in 1-1, thanks to Quagliarella (who’s not longer in Liguria), and an enormous boob of the boob.
Prediction
Score: 1-2 Palermo
Goals: Bellucci, Amauri, Miccoli
MOTM: Miccoli
Sono Bello, Sono Sano, Mia Madre Mi Ha Fatto Palermitano!

I’m watching the Milan-Napoli game right now. Pato is playing really well. Let’s get ourselves Renato Augusto please.

I agree we need one of the fresh Brizilian Talents

Did it really need to come to this for the big-wigs of Palermo to realise we have some serious defensive woes?
What the hell do these guys do at training??
The notion of champion team being better than a team of champions truly applies when it comes to defence. No new purchase will have that much of an impact on our very poor defence. Organisation and discipline is urgently required.
Do you guys think Barzagli is being assertive enough with the organisation of his defence? I hear so much praise for him; but he’s a long way from Cannavaro or the Baresi of old.

I don’t think he’s playing at his best, not even half of what he can do. But I blame the ‘two goals against in every game’-crap on Guido’s choice to put in Biava and Capuano. He’s got Rinaudo on the bench, and Cassani as well. Hell, we even still got Dellafiore…

I’ll try to put up a review tomorrow or wednesday, but right now I’m studying for my final exam of my life. Hope you guys understand…

When we had Rinaudo and Cassani on the field we were then still giving away goals, I believe. I don’t really think it’s fair to put all the blame on Biava and Capuano. Yes they sucked, but IMHO they didn’t do any worse than their respective counterparts. We had similar problems in the defence last season. Something’s just not working in the defence and changing 1 or 2 defenders wouldn’t solve anything. The issue lies deeper than that. It’s time for some major operation.

One defender can ruin a back line. Ask Cannavaro at Real Madrid. He is constantly having to cover that left side because Marcelo is caught out, or he gets beat. We have a similar problem except that Capuano is 100X worse than Marcelo. Biava isn’t horrible but he’s not good either. I don’t know how many times I’ve seen him make ridiculously stupid tackles, or let defenders beat him. I think Guido is opting for the more experienced, older Biava while Rinaudo may not have as much match experience but he’s got a ton more upside. If we’re gonna give up goals anyway let’s play Rinaudo. He was a regular starter at Siena last season so it’s not like he can’t play.
At this point, I’d rather have him stick Zaccardo in the middle and put Cassani on the right, or put Zaccardo on the left. Zaccardo is pretty versatile and having him on the left would be a huge boost, because teams key on Capuano and just run right through him. Having Capuano on the pitch makes the midfield work harder, and they tire so much faster. It’s not like he’s just a bad choice, he gets beat EVERY time. He’s even worse with the ball at his feet. I’d honestly rather put Brienza back there.

I think the Samp-game was a statement how poor our lateral forces really are. Thanks to our wingbacks failing to anticipate adversary attacks and being outrun all the time, our flanks were wide open for most of the game, giving blucerchiati all the space in the world to run into. Part of the reason why we can’t quite make 4-4-2 or 3-5-2 work is because we don’t really have any strong side-player. We need reinforcement on this part so I don’t veto Foggia in pink anymore. A quick solution can be buying Vargas and Behrami, while sending Zaccardo back to central defence.

Or just replace him with Cassani like some others before me have suggested. I must admit I quite liked Zacc-Cassani partnership on the rightside last year. Even though his defending skills left much to be desired, going forward the kid has a number of times impressed me. He’s a miles better choice than godawful ATC.
ricci, last year Shitpants was practically inexistent and Biava wasn’t featured all that much either. Yet our goal-conceding rate was pretty high. Getting a brand new partner for Barzagli - but isn’t that what we’ve been doing for last 3 years? Can’t help but wonder. Nevertheless, I do agree that Shitpants has got to go.

Kat, I agree our presence on the flanks is god awful. All of our players seem to be central, and as you said our best option probably is Cassani on the right. However, I saw Behrami play yesterday against Genoa and the kid is just a serial diver. He dove at least 4-5X and would cry down on the ground wasting time even though his team was losing. Plus he gets injured a lot. Unless we put in an over the top bid for Vargas, Catania is gonna hold him til the summer and I suspect Milan/Liverpool/Any other big club will buy him. We definitely need a player like Vargas who can run like hell down the wing and open the field up so opposing teams don’t stack the middle. I just don’t know who we can get.

even though Renato Augusto has only proved him self in brazil we should try to acquire him from flamego he has alot of speed and he can play the wings
or even look to france with tulio de melo
and on the Jankovic thing he need to start over Guana he got more speed and attacking skill then him and we need to give him a chance, he creates chance almost every-time i see him play
and read this article about the market http://www.goal.com/it/Articolo.aspx?ContenutoId=546495Posted from

I don’t want to have to be the one to print this sacrilige, BUT while we are all slagging on defense…..Amauri played like crap….and what the hell happened, I can’t name all the players that did this but every time some one struggled to get the ball towards the goal instead of placing a cross they fired the damn ball out of bounds! WTF?!

So what i have read is that tomorrow Palermo will complete the deal with Reggina for Brienza
FUUUUUCKKKKK SHITTTTTT THAT SUCKS WE NEED HIM ON THE BENCH

are we getting anything back? I keep hearing all these transfer rumors and it doesn’t sound like Palermo is really after anyone….I hear Gilardino is on the way out of Milan, any takers?

BAH GILARDINO I DON’T WANT HIM ANYWHERE NEAR US! We need midfielders, wingers and CENTRE BACKS!! We don’t need a useless, 1 footed, diving, crying, slow, offsides constantly, overpriced striker! Cavani is worlds ahead of Gila! Shit I’d rather have Guana play striker. I feel like I’m in that RedBull commercial where the Italian coach goes “BUTTA YOU HAVE A NO A WINGERS!” We need wingers!!

Franco noooooooooooooooooooooooooo There goes another bandiera candidate.
If we’re gonna spend 26M€ on Renato what’s his face, I much rather overpay for Vargas.
I second that, ricci. Never liked Gila’s overrated ass.
On the winger-issue, the society seems to be seriously interested in Foggia. Lazio might be asking for ATC or/and Caracciolo in exchange, and I also read somewhere uncle Zampa is even willing to buy Caracciolo back from Samp to get Foggia. This kid can play on both right/left sides. He’d widen our tattical options.
We’ve also been linked with Aronica who currently plays LB in Reggina. I don’t know much about this fella, but wikipedia loads him with praises such as, ‘renowned for his blistering speed,’ and ‘pace in abundance.’ Sounds like just what we need. Plus, he’s a Palermo native as well.Posted from

I’ll miss the short kid
He’s been with us since Serie B, and I always loved him…Anyways, Coppa is up in 20 minutes, let’s try and win it this year.

I was mostly kidding about Gila, but I heard a lot about Foggia a week or so ago, but it seems like the stir is dying down. If it happens that would be probably the best move we could make during the offseason

Yeah, we’re out…that’s what happens when you play Agliardi…

I got home and caught last 20 minutes of the game. Agliardi seemed pretty solid and I saw him make a couple of supasaves. The last minute Flores goal wasn’t his fault. From what I’ve seen of him in the last two matches he featured, he has actually got better. I think we could keep him until June as sub GK. Hell, if our alternatives are likes of Curci, Vivano or Consigli, I say just stick to Agliardi.

Viviano is way better than Agliardi, and so is Curci.

Um, watched the highlights, and Agliardi came out in wrong time thus he is to blame after all. But there was some clumsy defendng before that so I guess it was an collective effort.
Viviano and Curci both don’t have enough, if any in former’s case, Serie A experience. Back in his Brescia days, Agliardi looked quite promising, too. I honestly don’t see much difference between those kids and Agliardi.Posted from

It’s official, Brienza to Reggina:

The fact that he’s sold on a loan deal instead of a permanent one gives me a bit of consolation.Posted from

I’m so sad…I’ve made a commemorative post on him…

correct what I said earlier, I ment the transfer window…not the offseason. Oh, and Agliardi is ALWAYS to blame….
