Preview: Palermo – Commie Camrads
By: Steven | February 1st, 2008
Saturday February 2nd, 2008
Stadio Renzo Barbera, Palermo
Squad Status
Palermo
We got rid of Diana and Pisano, so that’s two problems less to worry about. In the back there’s the new guy Balzaretti (the guy better play a good game, because I already got a nickname ready if he doesn’t) and for the rest it’s all the same. No big buys during the mercato, which…sucks? After his terrible game against Roma, we might not see Simplicio today. Caserta will most likely cover things up. For the rest: Guido’s probably gonna try another Christmas Tree. Let’s hope he doesn’t. Seven players are one card away from a ban, so that’s looking good for the future matches doesn’t it!
Probable Line-up
Fontana; Zaccardo, Biava, Barzagli, Balzaretti; Guana, Migliaccio, Caserta; Cavani, Miccoli; Amauri
Livorno
First of all: no Giannichedda. Good times. De Vezze is suspended, and Diego Tristan (Marco’s Man Crush) is lacking form. Bogdani will pair up with Francesco Tavano up front, while Marco Amelia is still a fuckin’ Amaranto-player.
Probable Line-up
Amelia; Grandoni, Knezevic, Galante; Balleri, Pulzetti, Vidigal, A Filippini, Pasquale; Tavano, Bogdani
Categorical Matchup
Jimmy vs. The Unreachable Transfer Target: Jimmy. I have a blind faith in the dude, and Marco had stated a couple of times that he doesn’t feel like Amelia is playing to his level. Let’s hope he’s right.
The Fixed Bandit versus Pure Mediocrity: Palermo. With the entry of Balzaretti we can get rid of Capuano, which makes our defense about 54789% more secure. Now we still need a Biava-replacement, but when Rinaudo returns Biava might be gone.
Wow, No Simplicio? versus Five Man Madness: Push. Simplicio isn’t around, but I sure love me some Caserta and Migliaccio. Livorno puts five men against our three, with especially Pasquale giving me the runs.
Amauri and the Boys versus Tavano and his buttbuddy: Palermo. They haven’t been playing up to level for weeks, maybe this time they can turn things around. Tavano is no longer the man he was at Empoli.
Final Analysis
It’s getting boring: we need to win this. Livorno sucks, only just got out of de relegation zone…easy. Oh wait, so was Siena. And Empoli. Oh crap. We went up 4-0 last time before we started relaxing and conceded two, let’s make sure we keep it at 4-0 this time.
Prediction
3-1. Tavano opens the score, Amauri returns 2, Miccoli finishes off a Caserta-action.
Sono Bello, Sono Sano, Mia Madre Mi Ha Fatto Palermitano!

Balzaretti is just what Palermo needs right now. Young talented players that move their feet.

Man, talk about gettin the monkey off our backs! That was crucial.
A couple of quick things…
1. Balzaretti. Breath of fresh air. Kid played really, really, well today. A couple of semi-bad crosses, but other than that, he was BRILLIANT!
2. Zaccardo will miss next week’s match. Ahem, Rinaudo anyone? haha. I’m tellin you, he can play that spot!
3. Guidolin – PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE can you give Jankovic some playing time?!?!? You gave BRESCIANO time!
4. Finally, Guana was actually not that bad today. Some sharp passes. Didn’t give the ball up as much as he normally does. Seemed to be able to keep possession most of the time.
FORZA PALERMO! 3 crucial points, hopefully it get’s the ball rollin.

Guys, Balzaretti changes this team. His chemistry ALREADY with Miccoli is insane considering I don’t think they’ve ever played together. (Maybe at Juve they did, could be wrong) Kid has some pace and puts in good crosses and also knows how to play the slick stuff with Miccoli and Amauri. The fact that we actually have a left footed defender who can get up and down the line is making me giddy. All of our players drift out to that right side, and when you they switch the field like they did today, it really wears on opposition.
Guana was not bad today. Won a lot of balls in midfield. However, his talent level is not on par with the rest of the team, and you could see they aren’t on the same page mentally. Having him in the squad really stifles a lot of the creativity, I believe if Simplicio was playing we would have scored some more. Migliaccio won everything that was near him, he’s slowly becoming my favorite player. Runs so hard for everything.
Guidolin, you did good with what you had today but dropping Simplicio is a terrible idea. Give the guy a start and if he’s not doing anything yank him. Especially since we hadn;t done anything for 70 minutes or so and Livorno was just gonna sit back all day and let the 3 baldies pass across the midfield like morons. Miccoli bailed you out. Without the genius of Miccoli everyone is singing a different tune. I hate to repeat what Lorenzo already smartly said but Jankovic needs a chance. Kid is a stud who can run for days and beat ppl on the dribble.

Lorenzo, I think Rinaudo is a lefty, so playing him at right back is kind of out of the question. I suspect Guidolin to play Biava-Barzagli-Rinaudo from right to left, with his wingers a little further up.

Nice win for the boys… Now, can we gain momentum?
I would like to bring up a topic that may have contributed to our demise this season. The question I have is…Would we have been better off without Amauri? I love the guy, no doubt, and always will. But he seems to have been a huge drain on the club with all this transfer bullshit. He has one foot in the door, and..you know. Anyway, I think Grimaldi the Devil has finally got his head. http://www.channel4.com/sport/football_italia/feb2f.html
Ok, Mr. Amauri, you’re good, but you may be stretching it now. Zampa should have transfered him at the window and given Cavani a shot to blossom. Im not giving up on the season, but a CL spot is pretty much out of the question. And right now, we’re just training Amauri for his next club. Are you listening Sir Alex?Posted from

He HAS been a huge distraction. But one of our few play makers. Great point about Cavani. I think we should have loaned him to a team that will let him play the full ninety. We don’t need to stunt his growth on the bench.

I agree with you KJ. I don’t think we will see Cavani’s full potential until Amauri leaves. Cavani will be a great player but he has to grow up. Not shaking Guidolin’s hand is bad, ignoring him altogether is disgraceful. I thought he brought a lot to the table yesterday, but he was being played out of position and the sub was probably necessary. He’s still a young player and I think Amauri kind of taking him under his wing has helped him out a lot. But he definitely needs that full 90 every week.

HAHA, Lorenzo I saw that pic today when I checked the official website. I was shocked and disgusted that they put Guana on a picture to GET ppl to join the fan club.

Lorenzo, nice one
‘Give me that ball, baldy, you’re only gonna give another bad pass!’I’ll be commenting later, too much work right now.

Doesn’t it seem redundant to be playing two holding midfielders (Guana, Migliaccio) when one would be sufficient? Simplicio and Jankovic should be replacing Guana and Caserta. Then you can bring on either of the latter two if you get a lead to strengthen the defense. I understand playing the two holding midfielders when you play a team like Inter or Roma, but not against bottom half teams. Besides, after paying all that money for Jankovic, why alienate him to the point where he wants to leave? That doesn’t make any sense.

Hey Paul, you just won the million dollars. Hit the nail on the head perfectly. This is the problem with Guidolin. Last year it worked pretty good because we had Corini, who likes to be a playmaker from deep and can pass super accurately. Really the only reason to play with 2 deep midfield players is if one of them can dictate play from deep (Pirlo) and the other can win everything in midfield (Gattuso). Or if you have 5 attacking midfielders like Roma, and they don’t have the ability to track back all day and play defense.
Guana doesn’t even sit back all the time. He tries to run up that right side and link up with Zaccardo. Against a better team than Livorno this will hurt us bad, and it almost hurt us against them a few times when they played the long ball down that side. Migliaccio needs to stay, Guana needs to get dropped immediately and Simplicio/Caserta can adequately fill the roll of a central midfielder who can get the ball to Miccoli or the attacking players. I agree with you 100 percent on your point about Jankvoic, and I suspect everyone here does as well. He needs to play, period.
If Guidolin throws the same lineup out against Torino we are gonna leave crying. Corini is still one of the best midfielders in Serie A, Rosina scares the living hell out of everyone and their defense can be stingy too. Barone is the definition of a solid player. Hell, even Recoba hurt us last time and he is the biggest waste of talent I’ve ever seen. At least Novelino is starting Aimo the Clown, so we will be facing a team with 10 players and 1 circus clown.

1 clown + Marco Pisano since almost half of Toro defenders are either suspended or injured.

Good info Kat, I didn’t realize that. That bodes very well for us and our trident attack.

We’ve been lamenting this fact for weeks…dare I say, MONTHS!
Jankovic needs playing time. PERIOD. It’s ridiculous, but I’ve already realized he will not be given this shot.

Lorenzo and ricci – Good to know I’m not the only one who thinks Guidolin (and Colantuono) are idiots for leaving Jankovic out. Everytime I’ve seen him play for Serbia (which is only 3-4 times) he has throroughly impressed me. What’s really dumb about the situation is that if they don’t like the kid all they have done is driven his price down if they are going to sell him and are going to take a net loss. So not only is it stupid tactically on the field, its just dumb business as well.
I do feel pretty confident against Torino though since they have basically taken all of our cast-offs. Rosina is always a threat though and I have a feeling Corini is going to make Guana his bitch, not that that is hard to do…

I recently just sold Guana in football manager for a cool 8mil to Sampdoria. How do ppl rate this guy? He can’t move 4 steps consecutively without making himself look bad. Corini made him look like the second coming of Makelele last year.

Rosanero represent!!
Bresciano scored the third goal in Australia’s 3-0 World Cup qualifier win against Qatar last night!
Hopefully the goal in front of 50,000 Aussie fans will lift his spirits so that we again can see the Mark Bresciano of old doing great things for Palermo!

Italy was definitely impressive today. C.Ronaldo got OWNED the WHOLE game. I mean, Barzagli wasn’t half bad for the amount of time he was on the field, either!
ha. Well, more importantly, Palermo needs to beat Palermo 2….I mean, come on…

Barzagli was good today, I just watched the game on DVR. Cristiano did nothing except make Cannavaro look terrible on 1 dribble. Did anyone happen to catch Palladino take it down on his chest and smash a left footed volley off the crossbar? I think he drifted in and out, but looked dangerous overall. When we sell Amauri we should get some young talent like him or Giovinco.
btw, Pirlo = unreal for the NT. He just makes entire teams look silly.

ricci – i caught that. once again, c.ronaldo proves that he never steps up against bigger teams (whether it’s national team or clubs). pirlo, what can you say about the guy…he’s all class. plus, that first goal was unjustly taken away – he chested it down.
as for palladino, the gk actually got a hand to it and then it hit the crossbar – so, he was very very close to gettin a goal. unlucky. i would like to see amauri sent to juve for palladino + cash. kid is versatile.

Me thinks Italy would definitely have better chance having success in EURO2008 with a better ct. Donadoni is pretty incompetent coach, especially given the amount and quality of high class talents he can work with. Fielding 3 defensive midfielders together, wth?

I dont think he’s as bad as everybody made him out to be. I think he is making the right decisions in the squad he giving the young players a chance but still respecting the regulars.
by the way we better fuck up Palerino in this weekends game or we will look like the biggest pieces of shit out there
