Stadio Angelo Massimino, Catania

Squad Status

Palermo

Second away match in a row, and the first match of Francesco Guidolin’s 4th term at the Palermo-helm. There are rumours that Guido is gonna start the same eleven as the ones that were wrecked by Juventus last sunday. Personally, I think he’s smarter than that. Miccoli is still injured but everyone else is ready to play, even Migliaccio. Fontana will probably return to the goal after Agliardi’s show last week, although he skipped training today. I’m just hoping Guidolin will give Brienza the role of attacking midfielder, whith Cavani and Amauri up front. This way, we won’t have to play ShitPants. Giuseppe The Musketeer can take back his place on the bench, as Rinaudo is most likely to return to the defense. Up front, it might also be possible that Guido opts for a Brienza - Cavani attacking midfield, with Amauri as the lone gunman. Looking good, to bad Guana is still running around the midfield.

Probable Line-up
Fontana; Zaccardo, Rinaudo, Barzagli; Diana, Guana, Simplicio, Migliaccio, Brienza; Cavani, Amauri

Catania

Last week, Catania lost 2-0 to Napoli, with both Terlizzi (ex-Palermo) and Vargas suspended. They both return for this game, and that’s not good. Especially Vargas is a fantastic player. Sottil will probably not be there. Up front, Catania will most likely go for one striker, being either Mascara or Spinesi.

Probable Line-up
Polito; Sardo, Terlizzi, Stovini, Vargas; Baiocco, Edusei, Colucci; Martinez, Spinesi, Mascara

Categorical Matchup

Goalie- Palermo: Polito is not a bad keeper, but he’s got nothing on Fontana. This is of course when Fontana plays, not when the fourth Stooge is picking up his gloves again.

Defense- Catania: Fourth best defense in the league versus one of the clumsiest. 14 goals against versus 21. Vargas. I’m going with the Etnei.

Midfield- Push: This is a point of discussion. The Catania-midfield is strong, but if Guido leaves out Shitpants, Pisano and Diana, we’re so powerfull in that area. With those three: Catania. Without the: definitely Palermo.

Forwards- Palermo: 17 goals versus 11. Gionatha Spinesi having a dry spell like they only know dry spells in Darfur. Amauri having to prove he hasn’t lost it.

Final Analysis

Last season, both matches caused controversy. The game in Palermo ended in 5-3, and we all know what happened in Catania. Not looking at the disaster, we took 6 outta 6 last season, and we need to do so again this year. If we lose this game, we might be 9 points behind 4th place, and we’ll get laughed at everywhere. I for one am definitely not losing to some Catanese dumbasses. Guido needs to guide us back into the top 4, as soon as possible. Too bad we won’t be having any tifosi in the Massimino.

Prediction
Eager Palermo, trying to show that they can still reach a top level, and showing that banning fans won’t change a thing to their fighting spirit. The game isn’t gonna end with 22 players on the pitch either. I say 1-2, Amauri brace, last minute return by Spinesi.

Sono Bello, Sono Sano, Mia Madre Mi Ha Fatto Palermitano!

Miccoli hasn’t been convoked. So as Pisano. I hope Guido adopts 3-back system or places Zaccardo on the left thus save us from another Shitpants horror show.

Cavani is out for tomorrow. He apparently suffered cranial trauma after he was hit in his left temple… Hopefully, he’ll be all right.

Putting Zaccardo on the left with Cassani on the right would be the smartest thing he could do.

Diana on the field is like playing 9 vs 11. I hope he never plays again all season. Guana played awful for most of the game and the referee really ruined our chances. That challenge by Caserta was not even close to a red card…

and taking Brienza off was criminal…tons of creative little touches, really our only bright spot besides the 5 minutes Caserta came on for.

i cant stop thinking about january
we need a whole new midfield except Caserta and Jankovic all the rest lets get rid of. We can keep Migliaccio and Simplicio as well. the rest we can sell to the serie b teams.

Simplicio, Caserta, Migliaccio are good players for sure. Guana is the worst passing holding midfielder I’ve ever seen. Diana is slower than my dad, and can’t put a cross in to save his life. Get them the hell off the field and the Palermo team is entirely different. I’ve got to say I’m extremely disappointed with Guidolin’s first game in charge. You would think that the guy would learn after seeing basically the same team get eaten by Juventus.

i dont think theres much for him to do hes working with the same crap midfield.
the midfield is essential for a win.
they better train hard this week and im praying to God that Miccoli is back in time

Nah man we have some good players, not everyone is bad…he could have started Migliaccio over Guana and Caserta over Diana…If he does that, the game is completely different.

The midfield is not terrible. You could put Pirlo in there with Guana and he wouldn’t be Pirlo. The reason Pirlo shines is because of the freedom given to him by Ambro and Gattuso. Guana gives Simplicio nothing but headaches, Simplicio is tracking back constantly to bail Guana out. He’s slow, he can’t pass and he can’t dribble. A player like that will hurt any team, let alone a team that’s struggling to find it’s identity. Now I’m not saying that Migliaccio is the next Makelele but he’s 10X the player Guana is, and if you can’t see that then I’m sad to say that you really have no right commenting on our team’s situation. Secondly, Caserta for Diana is a huge difference! Caserta holds the ball extremely well and can win balls and pass very effectively too. Outside of shitpants and shitpants v2.0 (Pisano), Diana is the worst player we have. I’d rather have a 37 year old Tedesco running around on the right side. At least he can make things happen.

You guys will see…Migliaccio, Caserta and Simplicio is a quality midfield. Sooner or later they’ll play together. I just can’t believe Guidolin started Guana and Diana again.

Ricci i dont know who you think you are acting like your the God of the Palermo Offsides blog. first off i can have any opinion on our midfield i want, and our teams situation is our midfield cant get the ball to our offense and they dont help out with the attack. ok we have 2 outstanding midfielders Jankovic and Simplico all the rest are ok or crap so ricci dont tell me that your an expert on the clubs situation cause if you were you would agree with me.

Guys, to chime in on the whole midfield thing. I agree that our midfield has been the downfall of our team. Caserta and Simplicio are quality players, but they can’t carry the load on their own. Jankovic has the talent, but it has translated into squat so far. We need Miccoli back BADLY. He is our playmaker and is a good link to feeding the offense. (not to mention set pieces) Take away the top playmaker of any squad and watch them fall off the table. We will be a different team if he ever comes back. I don’t blame Guidolin for starting Diana. Now, my opinion will change if this happens again. When he was in charge last year, Diana was playing very well at times. Oh my, how times have changed! To go back to Jankovic, I think Guidolin can help this kid regain his form and actually be a formidable threat on offense. Hopefully, sooner than later!

Gotta agree with KJ. The return of Miccoli is definitely important for Amauri and our midfield. We rely on Simplicio for too much right now, with Guana on the field Simplicio is the main ball winner, distributor and engine in the Palermo team. He’s got no help unless Caserta or Migliaccio play with him. The problem isn’t only getting the ball to the offense. That’s a problem, but the bigger problem is winning the ball and keeping possession. We give the ball away far too easily. Look at Roma…Pizzaro plays so well because De Rossi gives him so much freedom and he only has to worry about passing and keeping possession. I think Simplicio has the same caliber of play in him as Pizzaro. He just needs someone who can help him out at times, give him the freedom. Having Guana on the field actually makes Simplicio’s job harder - that’s a fact. Go back and watch any game, Guana gives the ball up at least 8-10 times a game in bad positions. As a holding midfielder thats unacceptable! His passing is downright ugly, having Corini on the field last year masked the fact that Guana belongs in Serie B.

Giovanni, I don’t wanna attack you because we are all Palermo fans and we need to stick together. Sorry I came at you earlier, I was just mad b/c Palermo have been stinking it up. But your argument doesn’t make sense. To get the ball to the forwards we need to have possession and win balls in midfield, something Guana can’t provide. Until he’s off the field Palermo will continue to suffer.

Haha. January transfer for Corini would be the best move we could do. Sures up the midfield and fills the quota of bald midfielders.

I’m just gonna hold to the thought that Guidolin didn’t watch the gobbi match. Picking Diana over Caserta? Word criminal ain’t enough.
Ditching Corini has to be our board’s dumbest move of all time. He spent heack of a season, scored 10 goals only to get dumped by the club like a cheap whore because he is “too old,” while garbages like Diana and Capuano get to stay. Oh well, if we were to head for salvation, I hope at least it’d be a pretty one.
