Palermo Offside Sound-Off
By: Steven | October 13th, 2009Man, I hate international breaks. And with them being so far away from transfer time, there’s almost no news. Yes, both Manchesters are after Kjaer, but is that news? So, here’s something else. Since there’s been a couple of new guys lately, some questions:
* Why Palermo?
* Since when?
* One love, or Polygamy Sally?
Have phun.

Side note, I’m sure you’ll all be happy to read this: Liverani back to training with the team.

Not a big fan of the name change. I like US Citta di Palermo. It’s unique, if nothing else. Get that Akinfeev to Sicily and send Rubinho to Siberia. That would seem about fair.

have you seen that joke map where catania province is torn off from the rest of sicily and each of the other eight provinces are colored either pink or black…it’s kinda true. where i lived actually was closer to catania than palermo, and ratface actually grew up 20 minutes away, yet at least half of the town was rosanero. trapani: rosanero. agrigento: rosanero. enna: rosanero. even in siracusa almost all of the vendors sell palermo items

Pino, I appreciate your input, but for the last time: there’s no need to come over here and insult people. Everybody’s got their own opinion, and if we can’t discuss it in a grown-up way, then we’re not better than Roma and I can better quit this thing. You’re scaring of the new guys.
I don’t have Sicilian heritage. My GF has, but we only met in ‘05 and I’m a fan since ‘00. I already told you guys how it happened (training camp, received a shirt). Am I passionate? Fuck yeah. After games like Parma, Bari or Lazio, you don’t want to be near me. I’ve been to the Barbera quite often, even went to Prague and Gelsenkirchen in the UEFA Cup. But do I feel as ‘real’ as the Palermitan rosanero? Hell no. I’d give four toes to have Sicilian ancestry.
But I do believe, as Darren said, that you can be a better Palermo fan from Louisville, Kentucky than from Palermo itself. It’s all about what you feel and do, not where you’re from. And in the end, does it even fuckin’ matter who’s the best fan? Darren’s cool because he supports the team. It doesn’t matter since when or why, all of us non-Palermitani started out like that. He’s rosanero, and for me, that’s all that matters.

I’d give four toes to have Sicilian ancestry.
So you could live in northern Jersey working construction and having relations with questionable women?
Kidding!

Its funny how Darren and some others cant comprehend what I wrote….
Go back and read it…its really not a past an elementary reading level, trust me
I said my reasons for supporting palermo run deeper than Alessio’s Juve…After all, it was a reply to his snide comment “Yes, why Palermo.”

Agreed KJ

And Steven I’m not insulting anybody for if you read what I said I would be insulting myself as well ; ) I said that a Palermo fan BORN AND BRED IN SICILIA will “Out-Fan” any of us (unless of course, there are Palermitani here amongst us) but as I have and will say again: I live in NY but I can’t give 2 shits about the Knicks, but my neighbor would literally KILL for them if asked…

KJ, that was my point exactly. I disagree with your assertion that you have deeper ties just because you come from the area. There can be a variety of reasons that have tied you to a club, that doesn’t make one or the other a deeper tie necessarily. And really, why does it matter? A fan is a fan, and can be just as passionate living 1 mile from the staduim versus 5000 miles away. And Giuseppe, what about those who pay bundles of money every year to go to Europe, find a hotel and get a ticket and fly back home all in 48 hours just to see their team? That person is still being “Out-fan”ed as you say than the fan who has season tickets but leaves his ticket used for that 5th round game against a Minnow team in the Coppa Nationale, just because he doesn’t feel like going?
Steven – thank you for understanding where I’m coming from. I feel the same as you. Cheers.Posted from

Ale, I’d give the other six to HAVE relations with questionable women.

Lets just leave it at this. You guys are all incredibly passionate Palermo fans. Why does there have to be degrees on the level of fanatacism?

Well I hate international breaks also.
I properly started following palermo when i turned about 12 so its been 15 years now. My father is sicilian and we have a house there and while everyone else on the island seemed to be following juve or inter or MEEELAN I chose palermo lol.
I have to say as a palermo fan im happy for anyone that follows us .. the more fans we have the better and im proud for anyone that lives anywhere on the planet to route for our team on any occassion .. no elitism it sucks.
Forza Palermo and Forza Sicilia.!

We NEED to demolish Livorno tomorrow anything less will be a let down.
demolish=3-0, 4-1, 5-2
I will be pissed with a 1-1 in the 90th minute which I think will be the likely outcome. I’ll even be alittle pissed with a 1-0 win.

1-0 will do me fine .. I just want us to win 2 or 3 games in a row and climb the table .. no team looks head and shoulders above the rest this season … 4 cl spots up for grabs … If cavani starts firing like last season and pastore finds his finish (he looks like he is getting more confident) then we have every chance in shooting up the table. Lets hope bovo settles down and stays consistant like he was against juve.

I agree with gigi about people who love to define what a “true” fan is for any given team: just a lame attempt to make others feel inferior while claiming astronomical cred for oneself. As if there was some holy scripture of fan-dom that sets down commandments: “Thou must follow a team from your birth to be a true fan.” I used to love to listen to sports talk radio in NYC just to hear Yankee & Mets fans talk this kind of nonsense–it was hilariously pitiful. Don’t think there’s really any need for Palermo fans to do it.
As for my interest in Palermo: my grandfather was born and raised there. He died when I was not even 5, so I don’t even know if he was a soccer fan, but I remember him fondly still and so when I started to learn about calcio I kind of naturally gravitated to Palermo. (Also by the way there are some pretty great writers who come from Palermo.)
I also liked the pink and black–you gotta be kinda badass to pull off pink in pro sports.
I’ve even ended up buying some Palermo match-prepped jerseys off ebay.it (Cavani long-sleeve home ‘07-08, Mariano long-sleeve 3rd ‘05-06, and a Miccoli #10 turtleneck training jersey from ‘05).
Forza Palermo!
