Palermo Bits & Pieces
By: lorenzo | August 7th, 2008Well, it’s been both slow and fast as far as news is concerned. Currently, most of the Palermo players have been training in Levico Terme to get ready for the upcoming season. Like I said, most…
There’s another thing called the “Olympics” going on…and normally, I wouldn’t bat an eye if it weren’t for our boys the Azzurrini going for gold. And of course, the Azzurrini are being led by none other than current Palermo player and CAPITANO for the Azzurrini: Antonio Nocerino!
As you can see, Nocerino is the number four jersey and certainly looks great with the captain’s band around his arm. He and his fellow azzurrini put in a great performance today against Honduras. I know it’s only “Honduras” but they got utterly dominated in every facet of the game. Only after Italia was up 3-0 did the Azzurrini allow Honduras some semblance of possession and attack. We can all look forward to the next opportunity to see Nocerino and the boys play again.
Now, on to the random bits of Palermo news and info…
First and foremost, we learned today that PALERMO will kick off the Serie A season as the opening game against Udinese. The game will feature as the first of two games to be played on Saturday, August 30th. Ragazzi, take note of the date. Palermo will face an immediate test at the Stadio Friuli. Let’s go out and grab a full 3 points off the bat, and have Marco Amelia avoid Jimmy Fontana’s distinction last season as the Bottle of Wine recipient - the first keeper to allow the first goal in the new season receives a bottle of wine for having that “dubious” honor.
Palermo are currently training in Levico Terme where they’ve been taking on local sides in friendlies. They won today/yesterday by a score of 1-0. Jankovic had the decisive goal 31 minutes into the second half. He had a really nice shot off of a free kick that hit the back of the net. Colantuono was satisfied with the performance by the guys and singled out Miccoli, Jankovic and Carrozzieri in particular for their good play.
Palermo will face their “biggest” friendly in 5 days when they face the only Italian side in the Bundesliga. Oh wait a minute, that’s right, Wolfsburg is still a German team that is trying to field an all-Italian side. Nonetheless, two familiar faces will be wearing different colors when the match takes place. That, of course, will be both Andrea Barzagli and Cristian Zaccardo. If you click on Zaccardo’s name, you’ll see a great pic of him in some Wolfsburg get-up. Surprisingly, to me at least, Wolfsburg finished in 5th place last year in the Bundesliga, so they aren’t as bad as I thought they were.
Here are some other tidbits that are worth a mention:
Speaking of Guana, I have been thinking about this for awhile, and I am going to propose for the upcoming season, an award in his honor dishonor. In fact, it’s going to be named after both him and our other favorite nimrod, Andrea Caracciolo. It shall be known as the “Guaracciolo Award” and it will be given to the biggest bonehead in Serie A for that week. Ha! Knowing that Guana would be the recipient week in and week out if strictly kept to Palermo players, I’ve thought that we could expand it to all of Serie A. If anything, it should provide us with some entertainment throughout the season, as well as allow us to bust the balls of other crappy players on other Serie A teams. Perhaps, we can call upon Steven’s great photoshop skills to take the current photoshop of “Guaracciolo” and turn it into some sort of trophy-like appearance. Maybe in the form of an Oscar? Thoughts?
As the news happens, I’ll try and let you all know. For now, FORZA PALERMO!

…and speaking OF Thiago Neves…

Sabatini saying that we’re still interested. Although Fiorentina is on his tracks as well…

I agree Miccoli is great talent when healthy but he can’t seem to stay healthy. Bringing Neves in for 7 mil is huge both on field and off. If he turns out to be amazing that’s more money in our pocket.

More Thiago news…
Inter has now joined the race for his services and Thiago even had some nice words to say about Inter tracking him. Seriously, kid, you aren’t going to get playing time there, man!
Furthermore, Neves had a brace in this morning’s game in Brasil’s 3-0 win.
Zamparini, get out your wallet!

isnt fluminese in last place in their league…. i really dont know alot about Neves but ive never seen him show his worth…

Lorenzo- that might be all the motivation Zampa needs to get this kid to Palermo. He usually has a way of luring young prospects away from big team. Examples Jankovic, Cavani, Kjaer. Atleast I hope that was all Zampa and not RIno. But maybe this is his wake up call.

ricci - yeah, i watched the game at 4 this morning and almost freaked out after seeing that go down. luckily, he’s fine. nonetheless, if you’re still watching, you might as well turn it off b/c there’s nothing else to see that whole game. very boring…the Azzurrini were playing for a draw - and you could tell.

Where do u watch the games Lorenzo? I havent found them feeds online or on tv.

Lorenzo do u have the link where it says Inter is interested in Thiago Neves? I see that they are interested in Thiago Silva. Did you make a mistake maybe?

Giro - you can find all the soccer matches live online at http://www.nbcolympics.com All you have to do is click on the soccer link and you’ll find it right away. Crystal clear picture + no annoying commentary = perfection.
As for the link, Giro, I’m glad you pointed it out, because TMW initially reported it wrong. They had originally claimed it was Thiago Neves who Inter was after and even attributed the quote to him, when it was, IN FACT, Thiago Silva. Good call, Giro.
So, now, let’s hope it’s just a battle between us and Fiore-merda….
FORZA PALERMO!

Nocerino with a nice couple of long passes to Giovinco, but nothing else of note in that game. Except maybe De Silvestri getting eaten alive time and time again.

I saw that earlier today. What a sick left foot. Can he play as a left winger if he is brought here?

It looked like he was playing as a left midfielder in a 4-4-2, he tracked back decently too so I think he could do it.

nobody knows about the new shirts?

In regards to your question Giustino…
In my experience, at least, subside usually is a little slow getting palermo’s stuff out…If I remember correctly it was almost a month or two into the season last year before they updated everything. Have you seen pics of the new kits? They’re pretty lame…they were posted a few weeks back. I don’t remember the sponsor…

After the Brazil V. China game Thiago is getting alot of attention but it sounds like Us and Roma are in the driver seats. Good thing for us Roma cant close a deal this transfer season.

I prefer no sponsor, but these kits are uglier than Agliardi’s face so I’d rather not wear them

Ricci that 4-2-3-1 sounds tough. In that formation I find it hard not to outscore anyone we play. Jank on the left Miccoli in the middle Lanza on the Right and De Melo/Budan/Cavani up in front. With Nocerino and Miggy Covering our Defense I think it suits our team well.
