My God, that was boring
By: Steven | October 28th, 2007So…we held Inter to a draw. Fantastic! Oh yeah, and we dropped from 6th to 9th in the table. Way to go guys! So who’s to blame for this? Colantuono. With every game I see, the urge to get on a plane to Palermo and kick Baldy’s ass gets bigger and bigger. Inter sucked against Reggina and CSKA and were beatable, so any reasonable man would say: ‘Let’s put Amauri and Miccoli up front, backed by Cavani, Simplicio, two flanks and a 4-man defense.’ Wrong. Colantuono decided to start with Amauri as the Lone Gunman up front, backed up by Bresciano. Seriously, a 5-man midfield against a team without confedence? Not so much an excellent choice, bald Padawan. Bresciano limped off before half-time, showing absolutely…nothin’!
In the second half, Stankovic and Julio Cesar went out injured and were replaced by Dacourt and Orlandoni. That, ladies and gentlemen, is like a big neon sign saying ‘Kids, there’s a big hole up the midfield and a third-choice keeper between the posts. Get ‘em!’. Colantuono didn’t see it. Lots of long range shots, a few headers and some lucky balls saved by Orlandoni. At the other end of the field, Fontana showed off his skills for the zillionth time in a row, saving some fine strikes, most of them from Ibrahimovic.
As Martha, who is too damn fast posting match summaries, already said: why was Palermo playing for a draw? The Barbera was practically sold out, Miccoli is back in action, and then you start the match in a 4-5-1. We’ve got 3 fantastic strikers, and a guy like Jankovic who’s making the right wing look like a squadron of Messerschmidt fighter-planes…unbelievable. What gets to me most, is that it seems that our coach doesn’t want the attack to make the difference. Stop gambling on those draws against the top teams, we could’ve taken our second Milano-scalp this afternoon if you weren’t such a big, fat pussy.
It’s too early for a higlights-movie, but I’ll get back to you guys as soon as i get my hands to it. I’m gonna try and relax for the rest of the evening, trying to forget the utterly dull show of this afternoon.
Oh yeah, one more thing: Caserta rocked today!

Caserta was really good today. After he got that yellow he sat back and played a quiet match but he was playing awesome, awesome defense. Made some great individual runs too. MOTM for Palermo, easily Fontana.
Colantuono isn’t the guy. He doesn’t even really have the players to field a 4-5-1 but he does it anyway. Seriously, how do you start the game with Fabrizio fucking Miccoli on the bench? 4-3-3 would be perfect, absolutely perfect. Zamparini has got to be fucking pissed that Cavani and Jankovic ride the bench while Diana is playing fucking terrible. I’ve never been impressed with this guy and today reminded me why. Capuano, Cassani, both very unimpressive. Biava, Zaccardo and Barzagli all played well as did Guana. Amauri ran his ass off. Miccoli played a good second half and I thought Simplicio was pretty good as well.
Honestly, I hope they fire Colantuono immediately. Leaving Cavani and Jankovic on the bench is absolutely criminal. Jankovic has rocket power in both feet and is probably the best attacking midfielder on the team. Cavani has unbelievable pace, a nose for goal, a great shot and another target for corners. Colantuono is playing anti-football and I can’t stand it. One of the best attacking teams in Italy is playing for draws. Bring in Cosmi.

First, everyone here is unreasonable.
Miccoli is coming off an injury lay off and wasnt match fit to go the whole 90.
Next, the way Palermo has been playing lately, Inter would have put up 3 0r 4 goals if we didnt play conservatively. I think Colantuano wanted to make it a one half match where maybe we could sneak a second half goal to win.
Colantuano has doing okay so far. It is his first year after all. Give him atleast a full season. This “lets fire him now” bullshit shows pure ignorance.
However, I do agree that Jankovic should have played at some point. But what goes on behind closed doors we will never know. Maybe he doesnt train properly or needs an attitude adjustment?

Diana is more valuable to the team than you know Ricci.. He can play any position(hard to do on the pro level) and has shown glimpses of brilliance in the past..

First, Colantuono has not really been doing OK. Palermo have been getting extremely lucky. They absolutely STOLE a point at Udine due to their (Udinese’s) poor finishing and Milan hit like 194 crossbars in Palermo and then Diana dove for a free kick which the goalkeeper made a mess of. They looked unimpressive against Cagliari, Torino and fucking went out of the UEFA cup against FUCKING MOLDA BOLESLAV!
Second, glimpses of brilliance in the past? What the hell does that mean? A cross against Atalanta in Bergamo last year that brought us level? That’s the last thing I can remember besides him flopping at Milan that he actually did well. And Diana can not play any position. He has zero left footed ability so putting him on the left side would be awful. He can’t play CB and he doesn’t have the pace or requisite talent to play striker. We have 5 or 6 central mids so we don’t need him there. So if you referring to “he can play any position” means he can play right wing and right back, then I agree. Just because someone works hard doesn’t mean they should play. Everytime I see the lineup on ilpalermocalcio.it I wanna throw up. He fields a 5 man midfield with not even a true winger? You have 4 central mids and a right sided player? Diana’s crosses looked about as dangerous as lollipops and there wasn’t even anyone there to get on the end of them anyway. It’s not like every attack was stifled by the 5 man midfield. Inter got through the middle WAY too much and Barzagli, Biava and Fontana kept Palermo in this game.
Colantuono has even stated in interviews before that Palermo is realistically looking at UEFA cup football. In my eyes, they can grab that 4th spot. He’s just gotta play for it. You don’t need a 4-3-3 everytime, just act like you know how to coach. To me it was clear that if we got Cavani on in the 2nd half, he runs all over the field and counters really nicely. Miccoli looked awesome when he came on and played an awesome half of football. Why not give him the start? It just doesn’t make any sense and neither do you trying to defend him. This isn’t Scotland. There’s ways of defending other than putting 10 men behind the ball. Possession and smart attacking can act just as good as crowding the field. Let’s not concede the game before it even starts. In my years of playing, playing for the draw means not giving yourself a chance to win and often times the other team scores anyway and then what the fuck did you just even play for?

Just to let you know, when Palermo play well I’ll be the first to admit it. I’m not a negative person but this team is playing poor and they shouldn’t be. They played unbelievable against Roma in the 2nd half and that was largely due to the presence of Migliaccio and Cavani. They played really nicely against Livorno and well against Reggina too. But the majority of these games have been really depressing.

I think most of us are getting a little annoyed by the fact that we HAVE a team that’s ready to take that CL-spot, but somehow it’s not going the way it should. I think Capuano and Cassani are not good enough to be playing in a team with this level. they were good at Hellas and Bologna, but they’re more the Cagliari-Parma level.
Last year, Colantuono has shown he can do some great things with a team, but he just doesn’t have that special thing that makes him ready for a top 5-team. Pasquale Marino has it. And just to show you guys how bad it’s going: Catania is one spot above Palermo! It’s a fuckin’ disgrace…

You would think Colantuono would learn. These same tactics got Guidolin canned. Zamparini is a nutjob but it’s obvious very defensive tactics tick him off and he wants his side to play exciting football. Turning 3 points into 1 will surely get you in the UEFA spots versus CL qualifying. It’s there for Palermo…but you have to compete with Fiorentina and Milan for those spots. Really negative football just won’t get it done. Shame.

It’s obvious that most of you dont have a grasp on whats goin on. If you want to go fire power against fire power against Inter, we will lose EVERYTIME. We are a good team, but dont forget that we arent Inter, Juve, Rima, etc..
I have no problem with trying to shorten the game. If we would have scored a late winner, his tactics would have looked genius..
He had to beef up the midfield..Its obviously our weakness. Watch any game. Zampa needs to make some moves. Colantuano cant make chicken salad out of chicken shit.Posted from

Can’t agree more with you KJ…
I predicted a 4th place finish before the season started.. Yet, I knew we werent going to win some games pound for pound. I actually think Colantuano had a good game plan against INter. Yes, I said it. It would have worked out nicely if we notched a second half goal.(i.e Milan game) I wouldn’t leave Ibra and Suazo free to roam too much either, KJ you hit right on it stating that midfield is lacking. It flat out sucks right now. I would love to see a spear headed attack of Miccoli, Amauri, and Cavani. But until we can win the midfield, we are going to get exposed in the back. Barzagli and Fontana have been playing out of their minds so far! We can’t expect them to save us every game though. Fix the midfield and then maybe we can attack more. If we don’t, we have no shot for CL!!Posted from

You can’t expect us to win the midfield with the guys we had out there yesterday. Take out Diana and Caserta and replace them with Migliaccio and Jankovic and then we can win the midfield. Plus every time Capuano had the ball he wouldn’t even do anything. He would just kind of cut inside and then be forced to give the ball to a player in a bad position. Diana stifled Zaccardo badly on the right side all game. We had no wide presence, Inter knew it and would put tons of pressure anytime one of the midfielders had the ball.
Another thing is, Simplicio goes up way too far to give any help to our defense a lot of the time. Putting 2 midfielders behind Simplicio and putting 2 on either side, that could work. That would be a 4-5-1 I could get behind. It’s just the fact that players are playing out of position and the field is very unbalanced, that’s what gets me annoyed.
KJ - Napoli beat Juve with their firepower. Udine beat Juve with their firepower. Napoli put up 4 on Roma. Everyone is beating Milan. There’s very little evidence that we would lose against Inter playing a more open style. You just have to be smart about it and provide cover for our defense.

BTW…If we don’t step it up for Wednesday we are gonna lose. Parma has a strong squad - Cigarini and Dessena will cause us all kinds of problems.

I’m with KJ on this one. You don’t go with an all out attack against a team like Inter otherwise Zlatan will tear you to pieces. 0-0 is a good result for this game. I understand the decision to leave Miccoli out from the start since he hadn’t played in three weeks. About Napoli, they have nothing to lose so its ok for them to go flat out against Inter…there’s no expectations for them to finish in the top 4 or even top 6. With Palermo they are heightened expectations. If you can take any points from the likes of Inter, Milan, Roma, Juve, they are doing well. The key is getting three points against the Parmas, Reggina’s, and Siena’s. That’s how they missed out on Champions League last year. Against the lesser teams they should be going with a more offensive formation. Probably a 4-3-3. What about this formation?
Fontana
Zaccardo - Barzagli - Biava - Cassani/Capuano
Guana
Jankovic - Miccoli - Simplicio
Cavani - Amauri
Let Guana sit in front of the defense to help protect the back four and let Miccoli serve as the link to Amauri and Cavani.Posted from
