Island Adventure: Palermo – Cagliari

By: LorenzoRosanero | September 21st, 2011

Pal Cagliari

With two rounds of action already in the books, Palermo will play its first mid-week match of the new season. The results have been mixed as the tremendous win against Inter was followed up with a dud against Atalanta. Of course, these results are typical Rosanero style as wins against the big teams in Serie A have never been hard to come by, whereas the bottom dwellers have always proved fickle.

Tonight, Palermo face an impressive Cagliari side currently sitting at the top of the table with three other teams. Wins against Roma and Novara by 2-1 scorelines have left the Sardinians flying high and Ficcadenti’s men will aim for three out of three against their island counterparts. Both teams have plenty to prove in order to see just what each side can aim for this season.

Probable Lineup – Updated

Pal Lineup

Bench: Benussi; Mantovani, Munoz, Aguirregaray; Acquah, Ilicic; Abel Hernandez

The Slovenian was unrecognizable against Atalanta and the question is whether or not he should keep his spot in the starting lineup for the time being. The injury to Alvarez allows Josip to play on his preferred right side while Zahavi may make his first start for Palermo. The only question marks are whether the backline pairing of Silvestre and Migliaccio should stay but given the way Giulio has been playing, it would be wise to let it stand.

Final Words

A return home is ideal for Palermo as the conditions in Atalanta certainly affected the game. Devis Mangia needs to make sure the Rosanero are focused in this tricky match against a Cagliari side that has taken the maximum amount of points in the two games they’ve played. There should be goals as Cagliari has conceded in 10 straight games (going back to last season) and Palermo has conceded in 15 straight. The Rosanero have fared well at home against the Sardinian side and their record against Ficcadenti is unblemished. Nevertheless, the team needs full concentration if they want to earn the full three points.

Hard to do, but Miccoli’s free kick goal was even better than the one against Inter. INCREDIBLE angle he scored from. Wow.

Terrific strike from Miccoli but bad goal tending… kind of balances out with Conti’s goal. In all, a great midweek bounce back game… and another win at the Barbera. Congrats to Mangia for his player selection and tactics. The depth in our midfield showed in this game – I didn’t miss Ilicic at all. But now we march on Rome with a ‘normal’ Sunday afternoon tilt v. Lazio. Forza Palermo !

Ilicic behaving like a spoiled brat. He stormed off the bench in anger after the third sub was made. Hopefully someone sets him straight. Both Mangia and Sogliano seem more than capable of doing this.

I was just looking at stats for Serie A, and noticed that, no surprise, Acquah is at the top of the Discipline table, with three yellow cards. But what was a surprise is that Pinilla is tied with him, having also picked up three cards in three games…where’s the discipline?

Acquah I can kind of understand, he is a tackling, defensive mid, and he is young. The combo means he is bound to make bad challenges and get carded, but is there any reason for a striker to be picking up a card every game?

Both these players are seemingly a game away from suspensions, that’s a bit worrying…

Pinilla is one of these guys who can’t resist hauling his shirt off when he scores. Someone should tell him we’ve seen his tats – enough already.

If I’d score a screamer like that one against Inter, there would be more clothes coming off than just the shirt. Just sayin’…

The new Zune browser is surprisingly good, but not as good as the iPod’s. It works well, but isn’t as fast as Safari, and has a clunkier interface. If you occasionally plan on using the web browser that’s not an issue, but if you’re planning to browse the web alot from your PMP then the iPod’s larger screen and better browser may be important.

If you’re still on the fence: grab your favorite earphones, head down to a Best Buy and ask to plug them into a Zune then an iPod and see which one sounds better to you, and which interface makes you smile more. Then you’ll know which is right for you.

    cornercorner

Apple now has Rhapsody as an app, which is a great start, but it is currently hampered by the inability to store locally on your iPod, and has a dismal 64kbps bit rate. If this changes, then it will somewhat negate this advantage for the Zune, but the 10 songs per month will still be a big plus in Zune Pass’ favor.

I’ll gear this review to 2 types of people: current Zune owners who are considering an upgrade, and people trying to decide between a Zune and an iPod. (There are other players worth considering out there, like the Sony Walkman X, but I hope this gives you enough info to make an informed decision of the Zune vs players other than the iPod line as well.)
