Colantuono’s Siren Song, Part II

By: Steven | September 4th, 2008

A picture says blablabla…all we know is that Colantuono II has ended. It’s not that I’ll miss him, it’s just that Zamparini chose a very bad moment. Why fire a coach after one game? Ok, to be honest, he already failed against some Serie C2 team, and failed again against Ravenna. And yes, The Suit made some miserable calls last week, but at that given time everybody who understands football would’ve chosen Jankovic over Bresciano. But, as it is always, we have no clue about what happened behind closed doors. Seems like De Melo and Jankovic were whiny little girls (so it is said) and Colantuono wasn’t cooperating or sharing Short Fuse’s idea of football.

So now things have escalated and Zamparini has reached his own Magnum Opus. After the sacking and rehiring and the sacking and rehiring and the sacking and rehiring of Guidolin, calling Mutu a filthy, cocksmoking gipsy (or something like that) and threatening to sell the club because he was feeling badly treated by the refs, Ol’ Maurizio pulled the ultimate hattrick: sacking his (already rehired) coach, insulting the home fans for not showing enough of support AND lashing out at Reggina and Genoa. Could somebody get this man a straightjacket please?

The list of Zamparini’s victims in 21 seasons of Calcio:

VENEZIA: 1988/89 Cerantola (Fabbri)
1989/90 Pasinato (Sabadini)
1991/92 Zaccheroni (Marchesi)
1991/92 Marchesi (Zaccheroni)
1992/93 Zaccheroni (Maroso)
1992/93 Maroso (Zaccheroni)
1994/95 Ventura (Maifredi)
1994/95 Maifredi (Geretto)
1994/95 Geretto (Ventura)
1994/95 Ventura (Rossi e Geretto)
1995/96 Marchioro (Bellotto)
1996/97 Bellotto (De Vecchi e Fontana)
1996/97 De Vecchi e Fontana (Bellotto)
1998/99 Novellino
1999/00 Spalletti (Materazzi)
1999/00 Materazzi (Spalletti)
1999/00 Spalletti (Oddo)
2001/02 Prandelli (Buso)
2001/02 Buso (Magni)
PALERMO: 2002/03 Glerean (Arrigoni)
2002/03 Arrigoni (Sonetti)
2003/04 Baldini (Guidolin)
2005/06 Del Neri (Papadopulo)
2006/07 Guidolin (Gobbo e Pergolizzi)
2007/08 Colantuono (Guidolin)
2007/08 Guidolin (Colantuono)
2008/09 Colantuono (Ballardini)

And now he has brought in the wonderfull Davide Ballardini. A supertalented coach with a fantastic resume: the Parma Youth Teams, Sambenedettese, a one month spell at Cagliari, dito at Pescara and last year a pretty good run with Cagliari, saving them from relegation. Reminds of the last coach we brought in after having one pretty good run at another team. You get one free guess.

Maybe this is the right time for Zamparini to put Palermo up for sale. The fans don’t want him anymore, the press thinks he’s a clown and half of the teams in Serie A won’t be looking forward to transfer negociations after his crazy rants. We don’t need no cameljockey with big bucks like Man City or some American bastards like ManUre and Roma (almost). We need an Italian with big bucks and a heart for football and the city.

I don’t know about you guys, but I could only think of one successor to Capt’n Crazy that has all three properties:

Thanks for the good times Maurizio, but it’s time to cash in and retire. Ciao!

I will always be thankful

Congrats to Antonio but I can’t say I’m too pleased with this decision. I hope he comes back in whole piece.

Yeh I share the feelings Kat. Our midfield is too thin and the Azzurri seem to be injury magnets.

stadionews: Giudice sportivo: Ammenda al Palermo
Il giudice sportivo Gianpaolo Tosel, in riferimento alle partite della prima giornata di serie A, ha inflitto un’ammenda di 2.000 euro al Palermo

Why did we get a €2,000 fine?

Evidently for failing to prevent an “unauthorised person” from entering the area near the field during the first half.

See page 54/170 of the full report here: http://www.lega-calcio.it/comun/0809/cu54.pdf

It isn’t unusual for there to be half a dozen or more of these small fines for similar infractions on any given weekend.

Yep, thanks for your response Ursus.

I wonder if the “unauthorised person” they are referring to a club medic, or a fan, or Guana or Zamp ; )

Heh. The thought of it being Zamparini actually crossed my mind when I read the report, but a) he is almost certainly “authorised” (since he’s the one doing the authorisations); and b) had he gotten that close to the pitch, Colantuono wouldn’t have come out for the second half.

Man, talk about a momentum killer for Serie A…Everybody gets excited for the start of the season, and then…

Only a few more days until we can bitch and lament about how much our squad blows.

I did however win my first fantasy nfl matchup, though

Happy birthday Ricci! Sorry for the lack of updates guys, but there just isn’t any news out there.

For all you NYC-boys: my girlfriend is going to NY for 6 months, so I might be around in March or May.

Grazie guys! Steven, if your around we def gotta get hammered and watch some calcio. There’s a few good bars in NYC that will show games.

As far as Totti not starting that is great, he is the glue that holds their system together. If Raggi starts however, Vucinic and Menez will make him feel like a cheap Tuscan whore.

lets be hopeful. Raggi had a shit night but it was only one game and he has time to improve, and he showed great attacking promise if only he could learn to cross. Lets hope it was just an off night. Balza is great and Bovo/Dellafiore could be very good if they could communicate, they are both very quick which is a great boost. If Ballardini has a brain and starts our best midfield to their strengths and sets up the attack right we still have a good team. These are a ton of ifs i know, but i hate being pessimistic so lets pray we can teach roma how we do things in Palermo. The fans will give the team a huge boost i feel also.

Giro, I don’t think the announcement of our new coach warrants a fresh post. It’s just another ordinary day at the office for Palermo really ;)
