palenoa

Holy shit, what happened in Genova? It was an awesome game, but I’m still trying to figure out how we were able to survive the second half. All your juicy details after the jump!

First of all, the stats:

Statistiche Genoa – Palermo

Goals:
0-1 8′ Edison Cavani
1-1 59′ Julio Cesar Leon
2-1 66′ Julio Cesar Leon
2-2 76′ Franco ‘Whoop Whoop!’ Brienza
3-2 82′ Marco Borriello
3-3 91′ Amauri

Other:

Possession: 65.5% – 34.5%
Shots: 26 – 3
Corners: 12 – 2
Crosses: 40 – 13
Passes: 371 – 195
Succesful passes: 85% – 69%

Palermo started off great: starting Cavani over Miccoli proved to be a very good decission by Colantuono, and Simplico kicked ass in midfield. We can put his name behind the first goal, because all Cavani had to to was put his foot against that fantastic trough-ball Simplicio delivered. After that, the game was pretty tight: lots of chances on both sides, but no goals. Although I feel Simplicio had to finish off the chance he had when he went one-on-one with Rubinho. (who by the way looks like a 70’s porn-star). Guana was playing a great first half as well, lots of recuperations. Caserta, not bad, but seriously…the dude can’t cross a ball. I don’t know if it’s his hair hanging before his eyes, the remains of that horrifying Catania-air he breathed last year or just his DNA but E-V-E-R-Y single ball this guy try to cross hits an opponent in the head/face/glockenspiel. Private coaching requested!

And then things got ‘Palermo 2007-2008 season’ again…I think Genoa got 6 or 7 corners in about 10 minutes, Jimmy Fontana stopped about a zillion shots from far out and he even threw his old body in front of an onstorming player, twice! Genoa was kickin’ ass, but luckily their crosshairs weren’t well adjusted. Which changed after the break, with two magnificent Julio Cesar Leon-goals. The new Suazo? I believe so, sir. Cavani had the 0-2 on his foot, but was stopped by the Genoa-defense. In a bad way, because it was clearly a penalty. 0-2, we could’ve closed the book there, but instead it was 2-1. Enter Rino Fosschi. I can’t disagree with him: Gervasoni was right on top of it, and refused to blow his whistle. Rino went loco and was sent off. I love the man.

And then…then…then Franco Brienza replaced Aimo Diana. The kid started his 601st professional football game, and six minutes later…booya! 2-2. Get your commemorative Brienza-wallpapers here!

Too bad Borriello scored again, but for the second time in a week, Amauri saved the sinking ship: 3-3. Entertaining game, gained one position, but still…i feel we could’ve achieved more. Colantuono did some great things with the tactics so he isn’t to blame, but I felt like some of our guys looked like they’d had rather stayed home to go to Mondello. And I’m not the only one who feels like that:

“Non ho visto un Palermo spettacolare, ma solo undici giocatori che hanno messo l’anima e il cuore pur di non perdere. Anche contro il Genoa abbiamo recuperato in extremis e così non va bene. Non ho nulla da rimproverare ai giocatori, ma non mi è piaciuta la disposizione della squadra in campo”

Maurizio ‘The Venezian Oracle’ Zamparini has spoken. For all ye non-Italian speaking followers: Zamparini says he hasn’t seen a spectacular Palermo, only 11 players who have shown heart not to lose. He says that we have yet again tied the game in the last minutes, and that that is not a good thing. He also said he wasn’t pleased with the team. And seriously, can you blame him? We played a great first half, but I think that most of us expected to win this game. We haven’t won in 5 games (we also didn’t lose, but i’d rather take 5 wins and 5 losses than 10 draws), and we’re lucky Napoli and Udinese didn’t take advantage to make the gap between them and us bigger. We need to beat Napoli on saturday, or we’ll be losing sight of the European spots. Joe, roll up your sleeves, because it’s gonna be a blast!

Datasport’s Pagelle:

Fontana 7
Diana 5.5
Zaccardo 6
Biava 5
Barzagli 5
Pisano s.v.
Capuano 6
Caserta 5
Guana 5.5
Jankovic s.v.
Simplicio 7
Cavani 6.5
Brienza 6.5
Amauri 6

Man Of The Match:

Tied between Simplicio and Fontana. Fabio gave 3 assists, but Jimmy held almost anything yesterday.

The rumors for Bianchi are heating up again… I love my man Amauri, but if it is desire to leave, we need to snatch Bianchi ASAP.

Thanks for the kind words about Napoli, KJ. Whatever.

Zamparini is crazy, he’s not stupid. No way he lets go of Amauri…and replacing him with Bianchi? Shit, that’s a net loss.

You mean ‘Cerci’. And he’s on loan from Roma, who are planning to call him back in january. I love the kid, but on the other hand: he hasn’t proven a thing in Serie A.

KJ, Cavani was awesome. He would sprint back to play defense and then start a counter attack. Him and Simplicio were all over the place. Amauri was having a bad day before that goal. His first touch was awful, he always had his back to goal couldn’t get anything started. I say if Miccoli isn’t healed by Saturday we start Brienza in his place, let him play right behind Amauri and Cavani. The few times he touched the ball yesterday he looked pretty good. Oh, and The Big Serb, I think his best use is as a sub. I don’t think he’s adjusted to Serie A defenses yet.

Bianchi is awful. He’s just a taller version of Pippo Inzaghi. Reggina’s team last year was awesome and he got lucky. Cavani is 10X the player he is. If we sell Amauri I say we just strengthen the midfield. Miccoli, Cavani, Brienza – that’s better than 80% of the teams strikeforce…maybe bring up a striker from the Primavera if someone gets injured.

Steve, any news on when Migliaccio is coming back? We desperately need him.

Got some great news for you, Ricci: Migliaccio has been training individually again as of today! He’s hoping to play Napoli (his home team), but it’s probably going to be for the match after that. Great news, anyway.

Wow, I’m surprised with the harsh words of Bianchi…I suppose you could have said the same of Amauri when he was at Chievo..Oh well, I think we need to get something in return at the very least.. I dont think his 06-07 was a fluke

Also, Ive been hearing Lazio-Cavani connections.. Just talk?

I think the Cavani-Lazio rumors were based on the fact that Lotito wanted to swap Makinwa for Cavani. Terrible deal for Palermo and Foschi already said it wouldn’t be happening. Cavani is G14 material. His next club after Palermo will probably be a big club in Italy or Spain.

I don’t know if you could have said the same thing with Amauri and Chievo. Amauri was always a player with flair, making space for himself and creating chances. Amauri may never score 20 goals in a season while Bianchi will. Amauri creates his own chances and doesn’t rely on the brilliance of others to get his goals. I would rather take Bojinov with one knee over Bianchi. There’s a video on youtube of Bianchi’s goals last season at Reggina and if you look at the video it’s eerily similar to Inzaghi. All the goals are rebounds or tap ins.

Haha. I used to think that way too. Then I realized that when you field two forwards, one of them plays more forward and the other will drop back. (usually) Amauri’s goals this year haven’t been jaw dropping. A lot of them have been “poached”. However, the fact that he’s got pace, skill, talent etc. makes him 100X more of a threat than Bianchi. I would value Bianchi monetarily as less than Bresciano. If we give up Mark for Bianchi I will be very pissed. If Amauri does go to Man City, we need Elano and cash in return, no exceptions.

Haha. I guess I’m the only one who likes Bresciano. In the right formation I think he’s an ace. But Colantuono was sticking him out on the left wing and expecting him to produce. That’ll never happen. I’d def rather see him on the field rather than Diana though.

There are a few formations Colantuono has yet to try. I like this one.

    ————Jimmy————–
    Pisano–Barzagli–Rinaudo–Zaccardo
    ——Migliaccio–Caserta——–
    Cavani—-Simplicio—Miccoli/Brienza
    ———–Amauri————–

btw I meant to bring this up earlier…what’s with Biava? He was god awful yesterday. Looked like a lost child. what happened to Rinaudo? I thought he looked pretty good this season, plus isn’t he a lefty? He would be much better than anything we have at left back defensively so why doesn’t Colantuono just try him out there.

Elisa: there were scouts in the stands last week. Could be some barcelona-bobo on holiday in Mondello watching the games as well.

Ricci: i like that formation. Biava played some great games last season, but the only think he’s doing this year is starting to look like Cyrano de Bergerac more and more. I like Rinaudo, a lot, so I was disgusted that Capuano took his place against Genoa.

On Bresciano: the man is a good football-player, but he isn’t reaching last year’s level. if we can sell him, sell him.

On Bianchi: I agree he’s not any better than the strikers we already have, but if we start Miccoli as an attacking midfielder and Amauri and Bianchi up front, we’ll have a very deadly strike force.

No worries, KJ. No matter what team I sympathize with (Parma, Palermo, Avellino, Milan, Cittadella and almost any S. Italian side) all those sympathies go out the window if Napoli is playing them. I want 3 points and I don’t care who it comes from…but it is more fun pulling points from Juventus than any other side.
