Fat Boy Is Back
By: Steven | September 14th, 2009
What.The.Fuck. In only three games, Walter Zenga has turned a talented and eager team into Chievo. Not winning against Bari is unacceptable. Not losing to Bari thanks to a last minute equalizer gets you fired. I have a very strong feeling that Zampa was ready to pull the trigger yesterday, and Zenga only survived by suffering a (fake?) drop of his blood pressure. Hell, if I was working onder Capt’n Crazy and just delivered that kind of result, I’d fake a serious illness too.
I don’t like the way things are going these days. Zenga keeps relying on players that clearly would have problems getting a starting spot in Serie B. Balzaretti has to run down the entire left flank because Bresciano goes Splinter Cell from time to time, Davide Succi couldn’t hit a house with an eighteen wheeler and playing Cesare Bovo in central defense is like letting your 16-year old daughter go to a rave in stay-up nylons, miniskirt, killer heels and a tube-top three sizes too small: not a very good decision.
Another thing I wanted to talk about. One of our former compatriots came over here, complaining we are too hard on some of our players. The guy did forget to mention that for every player we bash, another player gets an awful lot of praise. If you don’t put in any effort, I don’t see why I should spare you in my comments. If you don’t like it, don’t read it.
Five Lessons Learned:
1. Mark Bresciano is not Serie A material.
2. Igor Budan is no longer fat, nor slow.
3. Cesare Bovo needs to be replaced by one of those Romanians asap.
4. We should’ve bought Jean-François Gillet over the summer.
5. Zenga will not see November.
Pagelle:
RUBINHO: 6.5. Best game in pink so far. Could do nothing about the 0-1, but did keep us in the game.
BALZARETTI: 7. This game would’ve been a train wreck without him covering the entire left flank. -0.5 for taking another unnecessary yellow.
CASSANI: 5.5. Granted Allegretti the 0-1, was lucky not to do it twice.
KJAER: 6. Not fantastic, but doesn’t have anyone to count on when he misses an interception. Put another solid central defender next to him.
BOVO: 4.5. Can we sell him to Torino? Didn’t put in a good pass all day and was constantly flirting with a red card.
NOCERINO: 6.5. Another solid game from TrampStamp. Can keep possession (unlike last year) and is doing great carrying the team as a Hummus-replacement.
BLASI: 6.5. Did better than expected, well-earned applause substitution.
BRESCIANO: 3. It ends here. Zenga will disagree, but it should end here. Another disgrace.
PASTORE: 7. Works well with Nocerino. Should have scored his first goal in rosanero and should be less selfish, but another great game.
BUDAN: 8. Worked hard, scored a nice goal and is determined to fight for a starting spot.
MICCOLI: 6.5. The Little Man couldn’t do much, but should’ve been better in front of Gillet.
CAVANI: 5.5. The other side of Cavani. Looks like he’s having a hard time loading up for smaller teams.
SIMPLICIO: 6. Nothing special. Didn’t fuck up, which is strange.
SUCCI: 5. Missed a great opportunity, waste of human flesh.
All. Zenga: 6. Terrible pitch, PK not given: there are things that could make his case. But Bari should’ve always been beaten with a 2 goal difference.
Giornata 3’s Androberto Guarraciolo Award:
Mark Bresciano. Hang up your boots, boy.
Impressions:

Balzaretti suffers the infamous Puglian Nipple Twister.

“Look at me, I’m not fat anymore!”

“Suck it, Edi, I deserved it!”

“Look people, he really lost weight!”

Grosso = Tireless workhorse that can handle the ball and score. Big time underrated for sure!

i actually chose grosso as the azzuri mvp in 2006, even over cannavaro. nothing against il capitano, but the run against australia, the goal against germany, the final pk…

San Gigi deserved the Golden Ball over both of them.

Steven, what did you think of that performance that a Defour-less Standard Liege turned in against Arsenal?

It was a good result of course. But if you look closely, they were also quite lucky. If Eduardo acts normal, the first goal never happens and the penalty for the 2-0 could’ve been given outside of the box. After that, they just closed up everything and only countered from time to time.
On the other hand, the 2-2 was a handball AND an offside goal. In the end, I think they did well and deserved a point, but just as in the Belgian competition, there’s something strange going on within the team. Too much players that think that 2 consecutive titles already make you a star, like Witsel, Mbokani (aka Missing Link) and Dalmat. Great players, but terrible attitude.
They still need to find someone who can replace both Fellaini and Onyewu, but with Marcos and Jovanovic they have the best back and striker in Belgian football, and youngsters like Carcela, Defour and Mangala are really looking promising.
For tonight, I expect an asswhooping of both Bruges (Shakthar) and Anderlecht (Dinamo Zagreb).

Spot on with those players. Jovanovic and Mangala were really impressive and the wide play of Dalmat caused a lot of problems too. That 2nd Arsenal goal was a clear handball and offside too, so they were a bit unlucky I thought. That Eduardo clearance was the worst thing I’ve ever seen. Who tries to backheel a high ball on their own 18?

Jova’s a free agent at the end of the season, and although he’s 29, I think he could add something to our team. Him and Defour.

We need to win this weekend or else. We havent scored a normal goal yet. Coach Z needs to put out a good formation and stomp Parma out.

And when i say stomp out I mean 4-0 5-2 something around there. A triple from micco or cavani would be nice and long range from blasi.

Quality football from both the Roman teams…

how serious is the threat of the bundesliga overtaking Serie A in the UEFA coefficient ranking bullshit? Would be a travesty to see the Germans take on of Italy’s CL spots. Roma and Lazio obviously are going to be a dissapointment, Fiorentina will crash out in the group stages, I have little hope for Milan, so that leaves Genoa, Inter and Juve to hopefully carry the torch. Inters european track record combined with Juve’s luck with injury leaves me far from inspired for this years europe cups…

The problem is that Italy could lose a CL spot thanks to result in the UC. Example: if two Italian teams reach the semi finals of the CL and one team went far in the UC, but Germany has three semi-finalists in the UC and one quarter-finalist in the CL, they would get more points for the table.
It’s mindboggling.

If there ever was a time to yell clamoroso, this is it.
CLAMOROSO!!! Budan possibly starting over Cavani on sunday!

I’d rather sacrifice Miccoli instead. Without Uruguayan our attacking force becomes too static.

Actually Steven, I’m not surprised and was predicting this would happen. I just did not have the coglione to think it out loud!
Last week we made 50 crosses and nobody could put them away. Budan loves to use his head so I think it is a fair experiment. But if we get no luck in the first half, I’d say swap back Cavani for the second half (and not wait until 60th minute).Posted from

Can somebody explain me how an injured striker that hasn’t played for months can be called up for Uruguay’s U20?

The biggest issue for Italy is in the next 2-3 years as someone pointed out on the main Offside. It’s the last 5 years, and if you look at 06-08, that’s where our coefficient is the lowest.

my prediction for the weekend:
Parma 2 (Lanzafame 1′, Bovo o.g. 90′)
Paledrmo 1 (Cavani 90′ + 3, or 10 seconds after he gets into the game)following the match, zampa fires zenga on the spot and re-hires guido

Just out of curiosity how has Pastore been playing. I haven’t seen him play yet.
