Tale of Two Halves

Finally being able to stomach that opening 2-0 loss on Sunday, I am back and ready for action. I’ve watched the game for the third time and have a few brief thoughts and observations. For me, it was the tale of two halves. For those of you that still haven’t seen the game yet, it will be replayed on FSC on Wednesday at 1:00 P.M. (EST)

-Roma came out in the first half and established themselves as a premier team. Hence, scoring in the 3rd minute, they put Palermo on their heels and were able to establish their up-tempo style of play. The one slight advantage Roma had was winning their first competitive game against Inter last week. Therefore, I believe they were slightly more prepared for this encounter. Nevertheless, if you come out flat against a Scudetto contender, they will bury you, every time. Lesson learned.

-Roma’s midfield thoroughly dominated the Rosanero midfield in the first half. Sure, not having Diana in the fold due to suspension was obvious, but I was not impressed at all. They were unable to control the ball and even seemed lethargic at times when the ball was up for grabs. In fact, Jankovic’s substitution at half was one of the best moves of the day. Whether it was first game jitters or what, he’ll get better. As predicted by myself and Chris at the Roma blog, the midfield was going to determine this game. And it did..

-After the halftime whistle, it was almost as if the two teams had switched jerseys. Probably due to some “encouraging” words from Colantuono, Palermo came out high flying in the second half. The midfield was able to work the ball to Amauri and Miccoli, and boy, were they ever laying out an assault on Doni! Miccoli really impressed me with his playmaking ability and we came close a few times hitting the woodwork. Cavani came in and offered some youthful energy as he had a few impressive strikes on goal.

-Palermo showed in the second half that they will be a force to be reckoned with this season. But, the game is 90 minutes, not 45. I hope Barzagli becomes the vocal leader we think he can be and get his team to focus on a full 90. We travel to Livorno next week and face a team that got thrashed by Juve, 5-1. Let’s do the same.

-I have probably been one of the harshest critics of Fontana and will be the first to acknowledge his great play . He played a stellar game with exceptional saves all the while keeping his team in the game. I still want Amelia, though. Speak of the devil…

In transfer news, Marco Amelia is still on the radar for Palermo. He has stated he wants out of Livorno and desires a move to Sicily. Yeah, yeah, yeah, we know. The deal, if it goes through, will go through tomorrow or Thursday. Apparently, Palermo has upped their original offer of 4 million to 5 million and thrown in Matteini for good measures. (Supposedly, Livorno want 7 million) PLEASE happen, please.
